  • J. A. HOLMES, State Geologist. NORTH CAROLINA GEOLOGICAL SURVEY. Oil pel Hill* N« C., November 21, 1899. Mr. J. A. Nichols, President Asheville Board of Trade, Asheville, 11. C, My dear Mr. Nichols: X regret exceedingly that important geoological work on the lower Cape Fear river which can not be postponed makes it impossible for me to attend the Southern Appalachian National Park Convention in Asheville this week. It is a matter of great importance and one which we must continue to push until a satisfactory conclusion of the matter is reached, and that will only be when we have a large national park in the mountains of western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee. I beg to assure you of my hearty interest in the matter and my readiness to cooperate with you in every way possible in bringing about this desired result.I sincerely trust that your meeting will be largely attended and that you will be able to formulate plans for pushing this matter before Congress. I I think it likely that we shall have to secure first the appointment of a Commission to consider the question as to the general nature, the extent and location of such a national park, and the interests of several ofher states would be gained in this way.each one of the states of course hoping that the Commission might recommend the location of the park within t&e-i-Kt territory. But of course among ourselves we recognize in advance the fact that in as much as in North Carolina we have the maximum development of the Appalachian mountain system and a large part of it still in its native wildness and in this way our miountains will present the highest claim arid the greatest advantages in connection with the location of such a park. Yours truly, u ja / / . y
