  • 1 U. S. DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE, DIVISION OF FORESTRY, WASHINGTON, D. C. GIFFORD PINCHOT, FORESTER. HENRY S. GRAVES, SuPT. OF WORKING PLANS. J. W. TOUMEY, Supt. of Tree planting. GEO. B. SUDWORTH, DENDROLOGIST. OTTO J. J. LUEBKERT, HEAD CLERK. November 11, 1899, Mr. B. M. Jones, Secretary, The Board of Trade, Asheville, N. C. Dear Sir: I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of an invitation from yourself and from President J. A. Nichols, of the Board of Trade, to attend a meeting for the organization of an Inter-State Association for the purpose of securing a National Park in -some section of the Blue Ridge or Smoky Mountains. The invitation is one which I should exceedingly like to accept, but the pressure of work here will prevent me from getting away. I thank you for your courtesy. The object you have in viev; is one in which I have long had a -very real interest. As early as »91 the discussion of ways and means attracted my best attention-and since that time I have become increasingly impressed with the great desirability of the creation of such a Park. While I do not underrate the difficulties in the way of your undertaking, it is a project thoroughly worthy of all the energy and enthusiasm you will devote to it and you have my heartiest wishes for its success. If I can be of any use, I hope you will let me know. y^X Very sincerely yours, Forester.
