Mamma and try to make her comfortable and happy. Everything very clean. Beds, etc new. She showed us one small single room on the first floors - the only private room on that floor. We are going over now to see if she could arrange a larger room on the second floor that would be furnished more like a bedroom and less like a hospital room. The change is more than we had expected but everything has increased in price; and help and good food cost more, as you know. The change for private room, board, laundry, and care (someone on duty all the time) is $50.00 a week. That is the best we can do, at present; so Lucy will take Mamma up there ahead of time to see the place and meet Mrs. Dodd. Then she will go Saturday for two weeks. After Lucy’s return, we can make permanent arrangements, either with Mrs. Dodd or elsewhere, taking Mamma’s reactions into consideration. I am returning to Boonville this evening Marnie and Dale and Alison arrive in Boonville Saturday for two weeks, during which time I promised to take care of Alison so Dale & Marnie can have a real vacation. Marnie needs it. She is very nervous, due to RH complications and after-effects of middle ear infection. Boonville should be good for her. Her baby is due late in September but with RH you never know.

In this letter of July 25, 1951, Barbara Bird writes her brother Leonard Kephart (1892-1988) to tell him that Lucy and Margaret got their mother from Boonville to Ithaca in less than four hours. She tells him about the options for their mother’s living arrangements after finding out the nursing home in Jacksonville is full. She would like to talk to him in person about their mother’s circumstances and wonders if he will be coming to Boonville or Ithaca this summer.
