  • 4 Iowa Circle, N.W. , Washington , D. C. , October 31, 19 21. Mr. Horace Kephart, Eryson City, N. C. Pear Sir: One of my best friends in this city is your son Leonard, (and his family) and he gave me your address, in order that I might get in communication with you on genealogical matters. I have done considerable work in this line, and, in certain respects, I believe we can co-operate to decided advantage, inasmuch as you also seem to have made some investigation. I have read your article on the Kephart name in preface to biography of Rev. I.L.Kephart, and in some respects I can expand it. I have had so much difficulty in determining my original ancestor that I undertook an analyzation of all immigrants of the name (Gebhart and Kebhart). As far as I 3f- can learn, 22 in all came to this country, 17 in form. Gebhart, Geb- hardt, Gebert, Gibbard, fgaberd, and 5 in form Kebhart and Kebhardt. I have examined the signatures to Oath of Allegiance of all of them except two, one who came about 172Q£before the law of 1727) and one in Virginia who does not appear to have been on the list. I have determined where most of them settled, and, in many cases, have the name of the children of the immigrants. Of the 20 who signed, 7 signed by mark and 13 by signature. Your ancestor, Nicholas, who arrived October 13, 1747, signed by mark, that is, soma clerk signed by sound and made it Gebhart, but. since it was later Kephart, it originally may have been Kebhart, like the five others of that form. No "Kephart*1 was signed at all, and yet no "Kebhart" has ever been used after these signatures on arrival (excep t perhaps to wills, of which the only case I know of was my great-great-gran df -ither). At least two changed direct from Gebhart to Kephart, perhaps three or four. Your list of nine stocks in the above article in Rev, I.L, Kephart* s biography is slightly misleading because of the fact that two generations are shown. The first one, Pavid, Jr., of Maryland, was immigrant Andreas Kebhart, who first settled in New Britain Twp., Pucks Co., Pi. , had dealings with the Davids, neighbors, and took their name for a Christian name; deeds show this evolution: Andrew, Pavid Andrew, then Pavid. I have a copy of his will. No.2, Nicholas, is your ancestor; his brother, Adam, is the immigrant, John Adam Kebhart, who arrived 10/21 /1754 , and settled first in Upper Lfilford Twp., Northampton C <a., and later in Limerick Twp., Montgomery Co. No. 3, John, 1751-1822, is my ancestor. He was from "Phila. City, Phi la . County, and had a brother Jacob who is said to have gone westward in linna. arter the revolution, loth served under Washington in Continental Army. John married Elizabeth Fretz, of lucks Co., a Mennonite; he was later Mennonite minister for 15 years at Poylestown. No. 4, henry, of lucks Co. and Virginia, was one of the immigrants Henry Kebhart, married Nancy Wismer, Bucks Co., and settled in the Shenandoah Valley, Va. No. 5, Henry, of Md. , Pa. & Iowa, I have not determined just who he was. No.6, Paniel, of N.J. and Northumberland Co., may have been a brother of my ancestor, No.3, above, but a number of Gebhard and Kephart families had Paniels, so he is a little uncertain. No. 7 , Jacob, with 4 brothers, of Md., Pa. and Ky. , was probably a son of lohn Kiphart and wife Susannah, and grandson of Gottfried Gebhart (later Go<3£mkephart), immigrant of 9/30/1754 , of Frederick,Ed.
