T knew nothing about climbing, I wanted people to teach me and I thought that rock climbing was cool and I wanted to get better at it, Eskridge sald At first, as she ex- plained, she was not very good and did not enjoy it miuich as she thought she would. It was not un- til she was introduced to bouldering that her pas sion for climbing began. Boulderingis.a type of climbing that involves taking certain routes to et from one place to an- other relatively close to the ground with the help of a spotter. This type of climbingis different than the top ropes, in which you are harnessed in and try to make it to the top the Climbing Club is a support system for everyone involved. Even though climbing is an. individual sport, there can bea lot of teamwork involved. People encour- age each other to push themselves to try harder routes and they cheer each other on when they know someone is working hard to complete a prob- lem. A problem is what climbers call the series of holds on the wall that make up a route. The Climbing Club has weekly practices. They get together and do ab kouts, hang board ning and workouts on the climbing wall that help with strength and endurance. They some: times play games such as limbo or tag on the wall. The sport of climbing has gained more popularity on Western Carolina's campus within the past year, Last year the team had around 15 mem- bors; this year there are arounds0. Taylor Stack, junior the gear, the moves and the places to go. Ihave this skill set and I know how to do it safely and so its almost my responsi- bility to pass it on, Stack said. Stack and Eskridge agree that climbing is a sport that creates com- munity. Ifyou go out toa place to boulder or even a climbing gym it's v relaxed and supportive It's a community where everyone shares the same passion for rock climb- ing. Eskridge said. Stack said the Climbing Club is an outlet for her. Going to practices allows her to forget about school, focus on strengthening her skills, help others see thelr own skills and spend time with the many friends she has made within the group. Throughout the year, the Climbing Club com: petes in several competi. tions in the Southeast Last month, they com: peted in the Rock and Rumble Bouldering Pte by isi Wain STAFF The Climbing Club participating in the Rock and Rumble bouldering competition. Competition hosted by Western Carolina and they competed in another competition in Brevard, NC. They look forward to competing more in the future, including the regional competition in April. The Climbing Club wel- comes new members who EIN A are experienced climb- ers or wanting to give it atry for the first time, The climbing wall is open to all of those who have access to the Cam- pus Recreation Center, It is operated by Base Camp Cullowhee throughout the week from 4-8 p.m, Base Camp also offers clinics throughout the semester to gain expe- rience with climbing.
