One of the reasons that "Raiders of the Lost Ark" is such a remarkably popular motion picture is that it marks the first joint venture of two great contemporary filmmakers, George Lucas and Steven Spielberg. Lucas is best known as executive producer of the three "Star Wars" films, while Spielberg is known for directing such exciting motion pictures as "Jaws," "Close Encounters," and "E.T.—The Extraterrestrial." In addition to executive producer Lucas and director Spielberg, "Raiders" features the behind-the scenes talents of producer Frank Marshall ("Poltergeist"), screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan ("The Empire Strikes Back"), and composer John Williams, whose fanfarous score won a Grammy award. "Raiders," of course, involves a search for the mysterious Ark of the Covenant, which according to legend contained the tablets of the Ten Commandments. The Ark was seized by the Egyptian Pharoah Shishnh in 926 B.C., and buried underneath the Tunisian desert, in a hidden chamber called the Well of Souls. The Ark is rumored to have mysterious, destructive powers, which would be at the command of whoever finds it. Unfortunately, in 19.16. Adolph Hitler seeks to recover the Ark and put it to his evil use. so he dispatches some of his agents to find it. Receiving word of this, U.S. Army Intellegence hires adventurer-archaeologist Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) to find the Ark before it falls into the hands of the Nazis. Along the way to find the Ark, Jones encounters his long-lost girlfriend Marion (Karen Allen), who after a somewhat hot-tempered reunion, agrees to join Jones in his search. Pitted against these two, on the side of the Nazis, is the notorious French archaeologist Belloq (Paul Freeman), Jones' old nemesis. During the ensuing quest, there is plenty of excitement, conflict, suspense, and cliffhanger-typc plot twists, guaranteed to keep the moviegoers'attention. In addition, the supernatural occurrences which unfold are stunning and fairly shocking, thanks to the marvelous special effects work of the Industrial light Magic Company (who worked for Lucas before, on "Star Wars"). All things considered, "Raiders of the Lost Ark" is a wonderfully exciting and engrossing film. When you pay to see the fast-paced adventure and intrigue of "Raiders," you're sure to get your money's worth.
