  • Tuesday, November 16, 1971 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN IV Soccer team closes 7-3-2 with twin ties by FRANK WYATr Sports Editor On Tuesday afternoon, November 9, the Western Carolina soccer team closed its 1971 soccer season in a 2-2 tie with Belmont Abbey in Char • lotte, N.C. "The main thing that hammered our performance Ties diy," commented coach Charles Schrader, "was a lack of hustle and spirit" So it has been since the Erskine loss. — Tne two Catamouit goals came as Patrick Che.mgs;;ored on an assist from Steve Weams in the second period of play, and Tommy Lane scored unassisted in the fourth quarter. Belmunt Abbey, beingthelast game on tap for the season, leaves the Cat booters with a 7-3-2 record. WCU's other tie, also 2-2, came Thursday, November 4, at Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa,N.C. Warren Wilson's Ow'.s held the Western Carolina kickers 2-0 well into the final period of play. Then out of desperation, WCU rallied to tie the score on goals by Duck Thomas, assisted by Tommy Lane, and Mike Michner, on a penalty kick. After one overtime, the score remained 2-2. So, now it's over and all that remains is a record and plenty of time to feel proud a- bout the victories and say "if" to the losses and ties. The 1971 soccer season began on an optimistic note witii the Catamounts 4-2 defeat of Tusculum College here in Cullowhee. Two days later and still on the home field, the WCU booters rolled ov2r UNC- Asheville, 7-0. Then the optimistic note went sour as the Western Carolina footmen were forced to bow to Davidson College, 2-1, in their first game on the road. However, the next game brought the Cats back home where they mustered the power to rout Furman University, 5-1. The Furman victory struck the spark that caught fire and in the next two weeks, three more opponents rose and three opponents fell. Western began by squeaking past Appalachian State, 3-2 on their polyturf, then returned to the home field to down Toccoa Falls, 7-0, and finally scored a 5-0 victory over eastern soccer power, Rollins College of Winter Park, Florida. Yet, on October 2(5, the fire was all but doused as Western's four game winning streak was snapped and a berth in the NAIA District 5 playoffs took flight, when they fell to arch-rival Erskine College, 5-2. 1st row (seated on ground) 1. to r. : Ed Stolle, Tom Wilson, Patrick Cheung, Wayne Marshburn, and Steve Weams. 2nd row (seated on bench) 1. to r. s Bill Barfleld, Cecil Lee, Gary Rhodes, Ken Mason, Bracky Brenizer, Curt Bal- ogh, Tom Wood, and Curtis Jerkins, 3rd row (standing) I. to r. : Coach Charles Schrader, Jerry Smart, Mike Bruder, Don Mincey, Phil Burros, Ralph Lundy, Ken Cassell, Duke Angler, Tom Montieth, Tom Lane, Mike Michner, Duck Thomas, and Gary Ellis. (Photo by James Carter.) The next Saturday, still unable to recover from the Erskine loss, the Western Carolina footmen again went down. This time to Clemson University, 4-2. Incidentally, Clemsanwasthe only team to defeat Erski.10 prior to their clash with WCU. Then, on the following Monday, all the tension that had built up as a result of the previous two losses was spilt in the form of a 14-0 barrage on North Georgia College. In that game, the Cat kickers broke the high scoring record. The former record had been 10 goals in a single game. The season then ended leaving 1971 soccer only memories and so much ink on paper. In total season shotattempts, WCU tallied 522 attempts, while T*snr PAttftV OPEN 7 0AVS A WEEK PHONE: 293-5885 IN CULLOWHEE opponents were allowed only 225. Of these attempts, the Catamount offense connected for 54 goals. In the meantime, the defensive unit held the opposition to 20 goals. In individual statistics, it was last year's leading scorer, Mike Michner, who commanded the limelight with 23 goals and 7 assists to his credit, Patrick Cheungplaced second with 16 goals and 9 assists on record. The next slot on the poll was taken by a tie between Duck Thomas with 5 goals and 3 assists, and Tommy Lane with Pregnant? Need Help? We will help any woman regardless of race, religion, age or financial status. We do not moralize, but merely help women obtain qualified Doctors for abortions, if this is what they desire. Please do not delay, an early abortion is more simple and less costly, and can be performed on an out patient basis. 5 goals ami 1 assist, Steve Weams booted 4 goals along with 4 assists, followed by Bracky Brenizer with 2 goals and 3 assists. To round out the scoring, Cecil Lee, Don Mincy, and Gary Rhodes each tallied 1 glial. "We have had a reasonably good season," commented coach Schrader, "though not as good as I had anticipated, with what potential I thought we had. Maybe we didn't give it all we had, and then again, maybe we overestimated ourselves. Who knows? But now it's over and saying what we might have done doesn't count, It's next season we have to look toward now." Next season will indeed present a challenge in that seven of this year's key players will be graduating this Spring.
