  • be By Katie Marshall Contributing Writer , Its that time of year when four years of too much caffeine and too frequent all-nighters finally pay off. On Dec. 15, the Ramsey Center will hold a graduation ceremony for students finishing their degrees at the end of this semester and for those who gradu- ated over the summer. The ceremony is un- ticketed, so students are free to bring as many friends and family as they want. Guests are en- couraged to arrive early and to use the shuttle services if needed. Traditionally, the Commencement speaker at the December gradu- ation has always been a member of the Hon- ors College. This year, Honors College student and Student Govern- ment Associate president - Alecia Lorann Page will _ address the December class. Students are expected to arrive for line-up by 1 . - p.m., but the actual cere- mony will begin at 2 p.m. Although the exact num- ber is subject to change, about 710 students are WCU News Services Online registration is under way for the third annual Valley of the Lil- . ies Half Marathon and 5-K, which will be held Saturday, April 6, on the campus of Western Carolina University. The half marathon will begin at 8 a.m. and take runners on a 13.1- mile journey across the WCU campus and along quiet country roads beside the Tuckaseegee River. The 5-K (3.1-mile) race begins at 8:15 a.m. Big changes from last year are in store for runners who sign up to participate in one of the races, said Sandy Terhune, race director and associate director of WCUs Department of Campus Recreation and Wellness. The 2013 events will be held on a Saturday, instead of Sunday, and the half marathon route is being revised to allow runners to mostly avoid N.C. 107, the main thoroughfare in the Cullowhee Valley, and to add more mileage , along the picturesque Tuckaseegee River, Ter- hune said. With the course change, a significant hill on N.C. 107 will be elimi- nated from the route, but it will be replaced by - another hefty climb on Old Cullowhee Road that will bring runners back onto the WCU campus, she said. We are going tohelp runners embrace the hill, rather than fear it. That last hill will be called the Catamount Climb, and there will be some fun and exciting spectators and volun- teers at the top to cheer on the runners, and then runners will have achance to purchase I Survived the Catamount Climb shirts at the fin-. ish line, Terhune said. eve eee te ee File photo Graduates throw their hands in the air after making their celebrated walk at Western Carolina Universitys last com- mencement exercises in May. Whether you walk or not, Mallonee reminded students to be patient waiting for the diplomas. They might not arrive as soon as you think. Since the diplomas are printed by an out-of-state print- ing company, it will take at least 10 business days to fulfill an order. . For some students, depending on how long it took for their degree . audit to clear, like if they had transfer work or if they had incompletes, its going to take longer. So there will still be people in February receiving their diplomas, said Mallonee.
