  • A December 7, 2012 SPORTS The Western Carolinian Catamounts wrap up disappointing football season By Allison Adkins Staff Writer First year Western Carolina University head coach Mark Speir is mixed about his feelings _ about his first season as a Catamount. Tt has been a good season, a lot of highs and lows. We have built a good foundation. I wish we would have had four wins, but I think we have been competitive, said Speir. Speir added, Ive assumed things. In developing our leaders, I didnt do a good enough job leading our student . football leaders. Speir stated that if he would have taken the time to help develop the leaders, the seniors, on the team that the Cata- mounts would have been better equipped to maybe win some of those games that came down to the fourth quarter. Tm discouraged that - we are not further along as a program. I thought we would win more than one. We didnt get it done, and thats disappoint- ing, said Speir. Gary Green, a red- shirted senior wide re- ceiver, said, This season was disappointing but also beneficial to the coaches and guys coming back because we real- ized we made mistakes, whether mentally or physically, that could be improved upon for next season. I believe it also helped our freshman who touched the field to gain experience. Speir and the players were particularly upset about losing the games to Citadel, Elon University and Samford University. T saw alot of hurt . locker rooms. A lot of guys were really upset that we lost. They are in- vested in the program, said Speir. Speir thinks that be- cause of the close losses ' this season, it will help the players invest in the off season. Speir promised, Next year, we will win them. My goal was to come in and be a team that plays for sixty minutes and to play in the fourth quarter, said Speir. We just havent consis- tently played for sixty minutes. But, where this team in the past has quit and ended an awful score, where teams have jumped out, our team has battled back and made them ball games and had an opportu- nity to play i in the fourth quarter. Despite the losing season, the players, changing directions. including the seniors, are pleased and even excited with where the football program is going. Green said, Next sea- son Im excited about how much of a better team we will be by sticking to- gether through adversity and always having fun and representing WCU to the fullest amount pos- sible! Speir is disappointed that the team did not send the senior Cata- mount football players away with more wins. However, Speir added, The seniors are the foundation of this new house, and they are excited about coming back and seeing where this program is going to be three to four years from now. They see that, in election terms, we are better off than we were. four years ago. _ It is important to Speir that the Catamounts are prepared for next season. The most impor- tant thing, in the eyes of Speir is to recruit 21 good football players for next season. Speir said, This off- - - season we need to attack _ ~ the weight room. We need to get stronger and work on our athleticism in - Our fans are awe-. some, they play a huge Photo by Mark Haskett New coach Mark Speir and the football team won only one game this season. part in the program, he added. We want our fans to keep faith in this football team. Keep be- lieving in us, andit will all pay off for all of us. The football team is so grateful to their fans that. they put up a billboard in _ Sylva. _ Western Carolina Ss alumni and staff are also proud of how hard the players have been play- . ing and that they haven't quit during a game. Everyones favorite Catamount, Paws, stated, The football season was filled with a lot of ups and downs. The team showed great potential throughout, and it is go- ing to be exciting to see what the future has in store with Coach Speir leading the charge. And, the fans came out and showed their support like never before! The future looks bright in Catamount country! Go Cats! Womens volleyball keeping spirits high after fifth place finish By Corvin Parker Contributing Writer The Western Carolina University womens vol- leyball team had their last game of the season on Nov. 10. The Catamounts finished out the season with a 4-12 record in the conference and an 8-23 record overall, making them fifth in. the north of the SoCon. . This season the head coach is Karen Glover, who is returning for her second season, and the two assistant coaches are Nicole McCoy and Jamie Smith. Many qualities of the team stand out to Glover, but the chemistry and unity of the team is what Glover felt was the anchor of the season. One of the main weak- nesses that Glover stated that the team had was thatthey wereayoung | team. The teams roster > contains only has two seniors, Abbey Scroggins and Cayla Crawley, one - junior, Morgan Cochran, and out of those three Crawley is a transfer student. The other 11 players on the team are sophomores and fresh- men. This showed Glover that the usual trust and teamwork found in the team needs to be reestab- lished or even recreated. on the team. The teams ability to function as a _ unit and sense of space on | the court arenotattheir peaks. The only remedy to this Achilles heel, Glover said, is to simply become more experi- enced. One way Glovers plans to reinforce this is to continually be support- ive of every player on the team, individually and together. One of the highest points for this volleyball season was beating Appa- lachian State University at home this season. Beating your rival is always a high poin a said Glover. The goals the team has for next season are to fo- cus on continual improve- ment so that they can be: the best in their confer- ence and have a chance to win the SoCon tour- nament. There are also other important goals, _ but they are smaller and the small goals will help achieve the larger goals. These goals include fur- ther unifying the team, strengthening focus and furthering awareness in relation to the bounds of the court and location of teammates on the court. . This season the girls took many things from their experience in vol- leyball. The first thing they took away is the experience of playing at a collegiate level. This experience allowed every individual player to fur- ther hone their skill. The second is the spirit of the WCUs volleyball team; the spirit of per- severance, endurance, patience, focus, efficiency and hard work. The third, and arguably the most important, are _ the relationships built. This season each and every player. formed are-. lationship that will never _ be forgotten throughout their lives. Even to this | day, Glover still talks to her old teammates.
