B2 august 24, 2012 ah f i \ FRESHMAN SURVIVAL GUIDE Keep to the code: Student Community Ethics keeps WCU disciplined By Carvan Craft Staff Writer New students may hear horror stories about Student Commu- _nity Ethics, but those stories are unfounded and exaggerated, ac- cording to the man in charge. How bad are punishments? What is the worst offense that can be committed? Will making a mistake get you kicked out of the University? Walter Turner, direc- tor of Student Commu- nity Ethics, discussed _ with this journalist the disciplinary system used when there is a behavioral problem at Western Carolina Uni- versity. The hearing has two phases: the finding phase and the sanction- ing phase, said Turner. The finding phase is where the hearing board determines ifa violation has occurred. If the board determines there is no violation, then the case is closed. If the hearing board determines that a viola- tion did occur, then the hearing would continue to. a sanctioning phase: During the sanctioning phase, the board con- siders intent, impact, character witnesses and | By Ryan Alexander Co-Editor-in-Chief 1. There is a reason WCU stands for We carry umbrellas and girls look for fashionable rain boots. It is because you need them. 3. Campus is deserted previous disciplinary history. , Turner continued that the sanctioning phase considers intent, mean- ing, did the student intend to cause harm to the victim or com- munity. When a student is victimized then the community is also im- pacted, even though the problem does not always have a victim. Our code breaks into minor or serious offens- es, and when asked to identify what the worst offense is, that is a dif- ficult question, Turner said. We look at cases . to either be a minor vio- lation or a serious viola- on weekends - It might seem like that because there isnt a ton of stuff going on compared to big cities, but the people are still around. By separation from the University, we mean the person can be suspend- ed or expelled. Suspend- ed means, the student ~ is separated from WCU for a certain amount of time. Expelled means the student is separated from WCU indefinitely, from the entire univer- sity system.
