  • -* March 23, 2012 WESTERN CAROLINIAN Page 4 CAMPUS VIEWS Our Take New convenience fees are unconvienient We are not sure if Western Carolina University re- alizes the inconvenience they have caused for both . the students and the university with the 2.75 percent convenience fee for online credit card payments. For students, it is a headache for us or our par- - ents as. we try to figure out how to pay thousands of dollars worth of tuition with a credit card: conve- - nience fee that could add up to as much money as a _ semester-long class. Are parents from Charlotte, Ra- : leigh, Texas, South Carolina, Ireland and all the other : hometowns going to be lirting up outside of OneStop : to pay in person to avoid the convenience fee? Not to mention, there are all the students who just want to add $5 of Cat Cash to their Cat Cards for a soda. But, WCU did not stop at paying more. They also took away arguably-the most popular credit card out there. Most students were handed a Visa card. af- ter signing with either the campus bank BB&T, the nearby State Credit Union across Highway 107 from campus or Wells Fargo for the on-campus ATM ma- _ chine. For those concerned with the responsibility of _ acredit card, most only have a Visa debit card. Now, .. students with Visa are forced to choose between Pay: -ing for a money order at the post office or their bank. For those with MasterCard or American Express, they will have to suffer with the convenience fees. Western Carolina has tried this method once be- * fore, but it failed after the backlash from disgruntled _ students, Due to students or students parents already _ having a difficult time putting together money fot tu- _ ition, the change could fail again. Was it not enough to raise tuition again? Are there not other areas where _ WCU could save money like turning off all the lights in a building at the end of the day? Or, maybe stop building more construction and decorating campus . _ with signs? Whatever way they Uadase: they should act fast. If * prices keep going up like this and the economy never t wees better, Western Carolina might find itself to be a university without any students who could afford a | their aod s Hed convenience fees. Ryan Michaud, Staff Writer If you. Hive. not yet heard - of the popular video explod- ing on the web known as Kony 2012, you should probably find your computer that you lost. The 28-minute video has taken the web by storm with over 80,000,000 views and climbing. The video is made by non-profit organization Invisible Chil- dren with a primary mission: stop Joseph Kony. Kony is the leader of the Lords Resistance Army, a militant group focused on abducting children from their homes, and forcing them into violent acts of murder and sex, trafficking. The video was made to raise awareness to the world and to make Kony famous. They believe that if people rally to stop Kony, the U.S government will send aid to help capture him. I first came across the video through Facebook and watched it in one sitting. I thought it was interesting and powerful..I also thought it was minor and would not gain that much popularity. Much to my surprise, that video exploded over the past week with numerous people | posting it on Facebook and - encouraging everyone to unite for Kony 2012. As much positive feedback as I _ saw, I saw an equal amount of criticism. I think it is important to acknowledge that even the critics of this movement acknowledge and agree that Joseph Kony is an evil man and commits evil and horrible acts. I have yet to see a post or comment that says, What he is doing re- ally isnt sd bad. Everyone is on the same page that this man is evil, and he should be stopped (dont you love a unanimous agreement?). With that said, many are criticizi Invisible Chil- drens : >. of depioying American advisors to Ugan- da in hope to stop Kony. Cartoon Some have even aces thee os ie . -. group and questioned its in-_ : -tentions. One source claimed: that Invisible Children made: over $8,500,000 last year : class : held for students at West- : ern Carolina University. : For my roommates and I, : things went as we expect- Poedias, and only spent 32 percent of the incometo services in Uganda. They argue that the wnajority of Invisible Chil- drens income does not go to the Uganda government to help capture Kony. but to filming and awareness. Based on what I have seen and who I have talked to, most people have a prob-* lem with sending U.S. mili- tary, to Africa because they believe we have too many problems of our own before we dive into other countries and attempt to solve their problems. It is a valid point indeed. This country is suf- fering from homelessness, a dismal economy, unemploy~ ment being at its very low and a national debt that will probably not even be paid off in our grandchildrens lifetime. Not to mention, we are in midst of a presidential. election. It is true America has a logon its already over- flowing plate. However, does our busy schedule give us an excuse to ignore chil- ' dren that ate being pulled away from their families, raped, killed, handed a gun and told to shoot their own parents? Some say yes, some say absolutely not: Some think that by sending troops over to Sudan (Kony and the LRA are no longer active in Uganda) will only add. ten- sion to our problems with the Middle East. It is a messy situation. Time will tell what the out- come will be. If Obama sends more troops, captures as a warning to other war- lords across the world, he will be labeled as hero. If he sends troops and fails by the end of the year, it will be la- beled as a waste-of time, and many people will point their fingers at Invisible Children and Capitol Hill saying, I told you so. : technical : personal. computing labs : across campus. : are also used to offset the : costs of paper, printer rib- : bons, and similar supplies : that students consume in : the : puter > enue from the fee pays NCELLOR'S WEEK GEYSER STARTING BELCHERS FavoRrE MoVIE: Quotable Tt sounds like a few people got some interesting room decorations. - Sophomore Mark Roberts on people stealing directional and _ nameplate signs at Western Carolina University. : nee at WCU a headache for Ae -desk we ao an Micxander .._ Co-Editor-in-Chief - Acouple of weeks ago, registration was At midnight on Tues- : day, March 13, we. all :. logged into MyCat to reg- : ister for the classes that : we had diligently mapped : out on our schedules, mak- : ing sure we got the right : classes at the preferred : times forthe 2012 fall se- : mester. That fee supports support and Revenues college-based laboratories. com- Rev- _ ties . _ provide ready~ assistance _ to students with questions ' related to network capabil- ities, use of standard soft- ware packages, access to information resources and the like, according to the Western Carolina website. The phrase that strikes me in that description is *... help-desk staffing to provide ready assistance to - students with questions re- lated to network capabili- .. To me, that phrase < - ensures that MyCat should be fully functional at all times, especially with the - amount of money. that is going to our IT staff. We have 9,429 students at Western, who all pay the same $255 Education and Technology fee. That fee generates $2,404,395 to make sure that our technol- ogy works right. I would say that with over 2.4 mil- lion dollars going to tech- nology, the class registra- tion system should work a little more smoothly. At other universities in the UNC. system, the class registration system is implemented. differently. At UNC-Chapel Hill, stu- dents are assigned a time on the day that they are al- lowed access to the class registration website. With students spread out across the expanse. of an entire day, the system is able to handle the.traffic and run without problems. Their class registration system can handle 29,000 users; so, it makes sense that our universitys enrollment. would not overrun the same system if it was im- plemented here. The current system of class. registration needs to be renovated, and there js already a successfy] al- ternative in place at other universities. So on behalf of all the stressed out stu- dents who registered for their fall classes last week, please fix it!
