  • November 13, 1948 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Page Three CATS DOWN INDIANS, 12-7 The Catamounts of Western Car. olina broke back into the win column Saturday night, Nov. 6, by defeating the Indians of Newbery College, Newberry, S. C, 12-7. Ovie Heavener, Cat wingback, tallied for the first score midway of the second period when he snagged a pass tossed by Pee Wee Ham. ilton which was good for 39 yards. In the fourth quarter, Dewey Whitaker ran 62 yards to save the game for Western Carolina. Once in the secondary after taking the ball on a reverse, Whitaker outran his interference and went on alone. Newberry's lone score came in the closing minutes of the game when D. C. Witt, Newberry's star passer, threw a strike to Josh Hall in the end zone. The pair repeated for the extra point. In the first half, Newberry was held to no gain but unleased a slick passing attack in the third period. Witt and Bobby Horton completed 16 of 39 passes for 211 yards during the game. In the third the Indians drove to the Catamount 1 yard line, losing the ball on downs and then drove from their own 8 to the Cats' 8 but the stalwart Catamount line held again. For the Cats, Art Byrd at guard, and Dan Robinson and Buffalo Humphries, tackles, were outstand. ing in the line while Whitaker, Heavener and Roberts showed up well in the backfield. SCOTTIES DOWN ' CATAMOUNTS, 7-6 The Maryville eollege Scotties threw a stumbling block into the path of the Western Carolina Catamounts Saturday, Oct. 30, and stopped their victory string at four straight wins with a 7-6 victory over Coach Young's charges. Trailing by 7-0 late in the 4th period, the Cats staged a desperate comeback drive that carried from Maryville's 33 to the end zone. Boyce Winchester and Cecil Roberts hit the line and swept the ends to push the pigskin down to the four-yard strip from where Roberts swept around right end for the touchdown. Frank Hardin's kick for extra point was blocked by Maryville end Bob Kenny who crashed through to take the kick in the chest and prevent the Catamounts from tying the game. It was late in the second period when Maryville struck pay dirt. Their marker was set up on a pass interception on their 40 by Bob Neff who returned the intercepton to the Cat 36. Allan Law, who played on the 1945 Unversity of Tennessee Rose Bowl team, swept left end on a reverse that carried 13 yards to the 23. From there, Neff passed to end Miller on the two, then Henry Merriman, fullback, plunged through left guard for the score. Guard Charles Andes kicked the game-winning extra point. Western Carolina fullback Paul Rogers and tailbacks Pee Wee Hamilton and Cecil Roberts staged a Catamount drive in the third period that carried the ball from Cullowhee's 30 all the way to the Maryville 9, only to bog down and lose the ball on downs. With tackles Buffalo Humphries and Harry Jaynes out of action, the burden of the tackle slots fell to Dan Robinson and Pinball Allison, and both showed up well. Clark Pennell played a good game from right guard, but it was team captain Byrd, running from the other guard, who sparked the Cat line. Time after time Byrd crashed through to throw the shifty Scottie backs for losses. Center Hugh Constance and blocking back Jack Arrington looked good on defense as did end Mace Brown. Entertainment was provided by a fun committee. Several games were played and the group blended their voices in singing. Other activities, similar to this, will be planned throughout the year. Mr. Cupp, sponsor of the club, is very much interested in the group and would like to see the club grow in number. With the added attraction of fun and entertainment, it is hoped that the students who are not already members will join the Chorus. Little Stranger When Mrs. Luther Taff left the campus, everyone thought she was going into retirement to write an English book, but it seems that the product has been produced in the form of a little stranger. The baby boy, named Michael Reyatt, will be called Short Range after his father. He weighed nine pounds and four ounces at his birth, November 4, and is growing at a fast rate. We are happy to announce that Short Range does not have his father's features, but promises to look like his mother. Yds.
