Bobbi Baker James a Western Carolina University celebrity alumnus Caleb Gray, Copy Editor : t Western Carolina Univer- sity has always produced ed- ucated and talented students like Bobbi Baker James, graduate of WCU and Jul- liard and actor. James ended her high school career with the idea that she would want to be a * journalist, but she found that after a workshop that she was _ not up to the task. However, while broadcast journalism was not in her future she said that she knew she still want- ed to be on camera, and act- - ing was the next best thing. ~ So, she came to WCU and declared theater as her ma- jor and performed in many school plays despite never ~ being in a play before in her life. James also participated ina study abroad program at : the Oxford School in London * for further study of drama. After graduating from : Western Carolina in Decem- ber 2001, James decided ~to go and audition for The ~ Julliard School for drama. . She got the idea from a peer She met in London who left ~ Cincinnati to go to Julliard, which is another four-year school. While auditioning for Jul- liard, James noticed that ev- - eryone at the audition, about 100 people, were nervously practicing, shaking and pray- ing. She. said she did not feel nervous, Because I was on stage so much at Western, I 5 was very comfortable with auditioning. I was very com- fortable being in front of ' people. ~ Her confidence and talent paid off when a callback list with only five names had her name on it. She said that The Julliard School sees about 1,000 auditions but only ac- cepts about 18 to 20 people * church are not different but a year. James was the first drama student from Julliard to grad- uate. with honors because of her dissertation about the parallels between the black church and the theater. Tt was very important to. me to make it known that urban culture and the black actually inform one another. A few months after grad- uating from Julliard, James married and had a job work- ing with Tyler Perry on his show House of Payne playing a spunky, female barber named Kiki. She said that originally the part was for a maximum of eight epi- * sodes. However, because of the chemistry between her _ and the other characters, they continued to write parts for her for the three seasons. One day while on set, James said that she was hay~ ing a great day and was on top of her acting game. She said Tyler Perry stopped the entire scene and asked her, Who are you? Where are you from? What are you do- ing? He was so impressed by her that day that he of- fered her a part in-his movie Madea Goes to Jail in front of the entire cast. James is currently work~ ing on a small independent film with a well-known R&B singer to offer actors who are waiting for the right part an opportunity. She said she loves the writing and creative side to her field. When asked if she would - give up acting and pursue writing, she said, I cant see ' me not being on stage. My first love is acting; thats who Iam. But, now I have found a way to have writing and acting co-existing together, and I hope I can kep that re- lationship going. : She is also a mother of a two-year-old son and said that being a mother and a wife are very important. ! one team thas four nm freshmen coming in next Hn
