  • Page 5 WESTERN CAROLINIAN August 19th, 2011 CAMPUS VIEWS _A Letter of Hope: A look at the situation in the Middle East Michael Jordan, Guest Columnist In our English 102 class here at WCU, we have con- sidered in some measure of detail the situation in the Middle East, our involve- ment in it, and the effects that it has had on everyone concerned. To briefly sum- marize the main conclu- - sions that I have drawn as the rsult of our research and discussions, I present the following: The U.S. Constitution is a document which is sup- _ posed to be one of the cor- nerstone documents of our legal system as well as our philosophy in this collec- tion of States. One of the principles that is central to _ its theme is We the people In other words, this is - supposed to be a country of - the people, governed by the people, for the people. It was quite eye-opening for me that, generally speak- . ing, most people are pretty : well sick of the whole mess -in the Middle East. There are a few hard-core patriots, Andrew Sullivan, Dinesh DSouza, as well as others, who still seem to be blind to the human costs of these ongoing conflicts. By and ' large, however, most Amer- _| icans would rather not have _ to face the consequences of _ this, our latest imperial con- - quest. Imperial - some would _Yaise more than an eye- brow at the application of this term. Let us, however, suspend our criticism for a moment and consider what the word actually means. or has not ) to tec According to the Merriam- Webster dictionary, the word. means the. policy, practice, or advocacy of extending the power and dominion of a nation espe- cially by direct territorial acquisitions or by gaining indirect control over the political or economic life of other areas: broadly: the extension or imposition of power, authority, or influ- ence. (Imperialism) It would seem that the numbers in the population who deny the claim that the point of our actions in the Middle East have been to extend the power and dominion of our nation are quickly decreasing, If any would still deny, then I would ask what are our reasons, for continuing this conflict? In the beginning, there were righteous and holy-sounding objectives: ridding the Iraqi people. of Saddam Hussein, ridding the world of Osama Bin Laden, ridding the world and the Iraqi people of the threat of the Taliban. There were just all kinds of bad- dies to kill. Where, though, are we at this point? Sad- dam has been executed: Osama has been shot and buried. The Taliban have . been gutted. Yet we are still fighting our war and spending massive amounts of effort, money and blood. The simple question is, why? Why are we still over there? The simple an- swer is oil lots of oil and lots of money. The wealthy autocrats of this country are - cooked up excuse. continuing to churn the war machine in order to contin- ue piling up their fortunes. So, in a broader sense, the core issue hereis not territorialism, imperial- ism, oil, humanitarianism, civil religion, or any other The core issue is attitudes peoples attitudes. That is what has to change in order for the situation to improve. The attitudes of people will have to change. Therein. lies my core of hope. Many have heard, surely, this quote before: The wolf and the lamb themselves will feed as one, and the lion will eat straw just like the bull; and as for the serpent, his food will be dust. They will do no harm nor cause any ruin in all my holy mountain, Jehovah has said. (New World Translation of The Holy Scriptures, Isaiah 65:25) Note the change in attitude not just in people, but in the animals as well. The lion is generally con- sidered to be a meat eater, not a vegetarian. The wolf and the lamb, of course, are. commonly considered to be natural enemies. This is the hope that I entertain. It is a hope of changed attitudes an elimination of the attitudes which form this world now. Imagine greed, avarice, selfishness, immorality, and the people who: choose to harbor those attitudes gone in an instant. The world would suddenly be a lot roomier! It would also be . aplace of peace. I believe that the time .will. come. Offer only valid at this location: 284 E. It just feels so good when you stop. Works Cited: Imperialism. am-Webster.com. Merriam- Merri- - PHOTO COURTESY OF METRO GRAPHICS Webster, 2011. Web. 8 May 2011. .
