This will be a great test for our up-and-coming squads, and. we ate. truly looking . forward to the challenge as we look to improve frdm the base and depth that we have formulated over the past two years with both squads. The. Catamount cross country seasons open on the Friday prior to Labor Day weekend as the WCU ' Invitational will be run on the on-campus mounts in Cillowhee: Tt is the ninth- time since 2000 that the Catamounts will host the event, sweeping both races a season ago with the women claiming their fourth-straight- title in 2010. The womens two-mile race takes the start- ing line at 6:30 pm to be-fol- lowed immediately by the mens 5-K event. Two weeks later, WCU travls to the Clemson Invi- tational at Musser Farms in Clemson, S.C., making the programs first appearance - at the event since 2006. The | women posted a runner-up finish while the men fin- ished third the last time the Catamounts competed in the event. The month of September comes toa close with the 38th-annual Paul Short Run, hosted by Lehigh University on the Goodman Campus on | Friday, Sept. 30. In addition to facing the largest field of . the regular season, the event will serve as this years an- nual grudge-match between the harriers from Appala- ~ chian State and WCU. The - rival Catamounts and Moun- : taineers will compete for little brown jugs in the same spirit as the football match- up, the Battle for,the Old Mountain Jug. . Inthe final tune-up before the. conference champion- ship, WCU travels to Char- lotte, N.C., for the Royal Cross Country Challenge, hosted by Queens College at McAlpine Park - the same venue as last seasons Char- lotte Invitational that saw the womens squad finish sixth and the men ninth. The annual SoCon Cross Country Championships will be held in Charleston, S.C., with the NCAA Regional event slated for Louisville, Ky. WCU will look to im- ptove upon the seventh- place. finish on the mens side and ninth on the wom- ens in the conference cham- pionship event a season ago. Western Carolina returns nine runners: which . com- peted in four-or-more events a season ago including ris-. ing junior Morgan Turner who paced the squad in all six meets with three, top- 10 finishes including, win- ning the Western Carolina Invitational. The 2011 sched- uled features nine home - matches, four tournaments and 17 matches in the state of North Carolina. The Catamounts open the season onthe weekend - of August 26 with a tour- snament at the University of Virginia, taking on USC Upstate, Western Michigan, as well as the host Cavaliers . in Charlottesville, Va. The team then travels back to North Carolina to participate in the NC State Tournament, competing. against a trio of North Carolina schools > A&T, Campbell and N.C. State) (North. Carolina for the: two-day tourney on Sept. 2. Non-conference ac- ; - tion continues the following weekend as the Catamounts travel to the Purdue. Tour- nament in West Lafayette, Ind. This season the Catamounts have only one: Saturday match that overlaps with a home football game. That match being played. later in the evening at 7 pm, following | the football game against 2011-2012 GALAA Wofford.
