  • ea RRR a SA DO eae ee ere eee 4 i | Page 5 WESTERN CAROLINIAN May 27th, 2011 ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT David Starnes named Pride of the Mountains successor Shelby Harrell, A&E Editor The new Pride of the . Mountains Marching band :* director is David Starnes, the * current director of bands at Kennesaw Mountain High ', School in Kennesaw, Ga. - Starnes replaces the award- he winning Bob Buckner, who ~ will be retiring July 1 after 20 years as director of athletic bands at WCU. We are extremely excited . about our bright future with * David Starnes, said Matt mes Henley, assistant marching band director. His successes as a band director are aston- ishing, and his fresh and ener- getic view on marching bands will take our program to even greater places. He is a con- summate music educator, and our current bandsmen will certainly learn a great deal from him. The selection of Starnes ended a national search to replace a man who has devel- oped WCUs marching band program into a significant | attraction for the campus of Western. Under Buckners leadership, membership in the marching musical ensemble now known as the Pride of . the Mountains has exploded from fewer than 90 to more than 400. During his tenure, the band received the 2009 John Philip Sousa Founda- tions prestigious Sudler Tro- phy, the nations highest and most-coveted award for col- lege and university marching bands: Capping Buckners career was a New Years Day appearance in the Tournament of Roses Parade by the Pride of the Mountains, which was named best band in the parade in an online poll con- ducted by KTLA-TV of Los Angeles. ,Many members of the Pride of the Mountains are excited about the selection of Starnes. T can tell he is so excited to get working on the show for the fall, said Kaitlin Saulter, who will be a senior band member in the fall. He seems absolutely dedicated to the marching band and wants to jump right on board with how this program is run, Starnes joined the music faculty at Kennesaw Moun- PHOTO SUBMITTED i Starnes is : currently the director of bands at Kennesaw Mountain Hi igh School i in 1 Kennesaw, Ga. tain i ooh Gehoo! when the school Spened in August 2000. Under his guidance, the schools band program has grown from 85 students to a. membership of 250. Like Western, the Ken- nesaw Mountain program re- ceived recognition from the Sousa Foundation and was awarded. the Sudler Shield of Excellence for outstanding achievement in high school marching bands in 2003. And the Kennesaw band par- ticipated in the 79th annual Macys Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City: in 2005. Starnes said he is a long- time admirer of Buckner and the Pride of the Mountains, and is excited about the op- portunity to be the bands next director. Western Carolinas march- ing band has a reputation in the college band world as be- ing one of the most entertain- ing as well as innovative pro- grams, while still maintaining an identity that makes it truly WCU. It is my goal to con- _tinue to offer the same flavor and excitement that allowed this band to be named the fan favorite at the Tournament of Roses Parade in January 2011, said Starnes. Starnes is sought out na- tionally and internationally as an adjudicator, clinician, guest conductor and creative designer. He served as an ad- judicator for many state, na-~ tional and international orga- nizations including Bands of America, where he is a mem- ber of the Advisory Board; Winter Guard International; and Drum Corps Interna- tional, where he served as an adjudicator and percussion caption head from 1998 until 2002. Starnes is from Chattanoo- ga, Tenn., and graduated from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville in 1988, where he earned a bachelors degree in. music education. IT expect everything to go along with the season just as if there was not a change in directors, said Saulter. - Yes, it is a drastic change and this will be a new experi- ence for the veterans, but that shouldnt slow us down as a band to create one of the best halftime shows Western Car- olina has ever seen. _ Summer 2011 movie preview: Superheroes! Harry Potter! More superheroes! Dennis Perkins, Syndicated Content Summer movie season, when Hollywood unveils the shiny movie behemoths meticulously crafted to pry enough cash from air condi- tioner-starved audiences to . sustain it through the rest of the year. Sure, you might not find a lot of Oscar bait in your summer multiplex, but things are gonna blow up real good. There i is going to be supet- heroes, horror newbies and. - sequels, comedies and more superheroes. Should you join the ee ', throng lining up to give Stan : , Lee your hard-earned money? Well, I suggest using my ut- terly scientific Summer Fun + Index (SFI), which compares _ the potential enjoyment youll ' } > get from each offering to a tra- ditional summer activity. Release dates are subject to change. MAY27_- HANGOVER-PART I (R): Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis and _ that boring guy are back in a sequel that recycles the plot : of the original to a shameless degree. (This time, Helms gets married and -- SPOIL- ER!! -- everyone blacks out .- and scrambles around trying _;> to uncover what the hell hap- : . pened.) The original was pret- ty lazy but partially redeemed by some funny people, and the sequel promises exactly the E same, lucrative formula. } SFI: A Sunday-night party thrown to finish off Saturday - nights warm keg. KUNG FU PANDA 2 (PG): Jack Blacks roly-poly ursine animated avatar returns :> for more comedic: butt-kick- - ing in this sequel with one of - those absurdly overqualified - voice casts (Dustin Hoffman, Gary Oldman, David Cross, Angelina Jolie, Jackie Chan, Seth Rogen, Michelle Yeoh) that tries to make up for sub- PIXAR quality. SFI: Watching a toddlers -* martial arts class. THE TREE OF LIFE (PG-13): Since 1973s Bad- lands, director Terrence Ma- lick has graced us with one '. visually stunning, brilliantly . enigmatic masterpiece every .- decade or so (Days of Heav- * en, The Thin Red Line, _ The New World), and hes brought us another gift with - this 1950s-set, coming-of-age '. story starring Brad Pitt and '. Sean Penn. The previews a stunner, and Malick means must-see for any film fan. SFI: Staying up all night reading poetry, then watching the sun rise and marveling at the beauty of it all. JUNE 3 X-MEN: FIRST CLASS (PG-13): The superhero on- slaught continues with this prequel detailing the . birth of the Marvel Comics mu- tant team whose grown-up _ exploits. have inspired. films of decreasing quality. Some - talented Brits (Michael Fass- bender, James McAvoy) and Mad Men s dull-but-dishy January Jones as the legend- arily underdressed Emma Frost try to pep up this origin story, with Kick Ass direc- tor Matthew Vaughn promis- ing similarly hyped-up action. SFI: A really professional Mutants on Ice show. BEGINNERS (R): Old pro Christopher Plummer shocks son Ewan McGregor with the all-time double- whammy surprise announce- ment (Im gay.,lm dying.) in this heartwarming-looking drama. SFI: An awkward family picnic with serious hugs: at the end. JUNE 10 SUPER? 8). ((NO TE "Yas F RATED): The master of neat ideas and so-so execution, J.J. Abrams (Lost, Alias, Star Trek, Cloverfield) cranks out this thriller about some spunky kids (including Elle Fanning) in smalltown 1979 who investigate the su- pernatural weirdness resulting from a nearby train crash. As usual, I anticipate the trailer being more satisfying than the actual film. SFI: A worlds biggest flea market: sign advertising a dinky yard sale where you take home a lamp with no shade. JUNE 17 GREEN LANTERN (NOT YET RATED): DC Comics makes its stand against the Marvel summer in- vasion with the cosmic adven- tures of Hal Jordan, Earths first member of the magic ring-slinging intergalactic po- lice force the Green Lantern Corps. On the plus side, Ryan Reynolds cocky wisecracks seem suited to Jordans dare- deviltry, and director Martin Campbell has helmed the best Bond films of two genera- tions (Goldeneye, Casino Royale). On the worrisome side: late reshoots, and the fact that Jordan was always a bit of a stiff. SFI: A lighthouse tour on a fast, leaky boat. MR. POPPERS PEN- GUINS (PG): Jim Carrey adopts penguins. People love penguins. SFI: An afternoon at the zoo watching penguins. UNE 24 was my least-favorite PLXAR movie. Which means I only really liked it. A lot. Seriously, PIXAR is the patron saint of parents beleaguered by shrill, insulting childrens . enter- tainment, not to mention the rest of us who just love great, imaginative, exciting movies. In this sequel, Owen Wilsons racecar takes off to challenge the best in the world, includ- ing cult hero Bruce Camp- bells. Euro-car. Guaranteed fun. SFI: Taking your favorite niece to the best carnival in town. BAD. TEACHER. (R): Cameron Diaz plays the un- scrupulous vixen educator who gloms onto rich good- guy teacher Justin Timberlake when her rich fiancee dumps her, with slacker gym teacher Jason Segel looking to score her on the rebound. Some fun- ny people and a script from a couple of writers from The Office make this dark com- edy seem like a solid bet. SFI: Summer school with the one fun teacher. JULY 1 TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON (PG-13): BIG TRUCKS GO SMASH! (If you need any more information than that, then youre probably not go- ing to see this second sequel based on a toy line anyway.) On theplus side, Megan Fox has left the series, ensuring that only the robots will seem robotic. SFI: A night at the demoli- tion derby, except that the cars all have really bad dialogue. LARRY CROWNE (PG-13): Americas co-sweet- hearts Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts team up to conquer the world with their combined wholesome star power in this Hanks-directed comedy about a recently unemployed mid- dle-aged guy who goes back to college. Dont try to resist Tom and Julia -- they will de- stroy. you. SFI: A. pleasant picnic SCARS (PG). Garg? lunch with lots of Wonder Bread. MONTE CARLO (PG): Disney-spawned tween stars Leighton Meester and Sele- na Gomez have family-safe romantic adventures in this movie Ill never see. SFI: Summer school. JULY 8 ONE DAY (PG-13): y Anne Hathaway and Jim Stur- gess play a pair of on-again, off-again lovers we see on the same day every, year -- some spent together, and some not. Sometimes such gimmicky premises pay off (Betrayal), and, sometimes, they dont (Same Time Next Year). SFI: Asking your ex out for a romantic dinner: risky, but possibly rewarding. *ZOOKEEPBRY,. (PG): Adam Sandler continues to set up his pals with high-concept comedy vehicles. This time, its Kevin James as a love- lorn zookeeper whose ariimal charges organize to help him win. Rosario Dawsons im- probably attractive hand. SFI: Pd say a day at the zoo, but I like zoos. HORRIBLE BOSSES. _ (NOT YET RATED): Three very funny guys (Jason Sude- kis, Charlie Day, Jason Bate- man) form an alliance to kill . the titular jerks who theyve decided are ruining their lives. The three leads, plus evil bosses Kevin Spacey, Jenni- fer Anistonand Colin Farrell, promise some dark laughs. SFI: Tipping your boss garbage cans over in the mid- dle of the night: prea but satisfying. JULY 15 HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY | HAL- LOWS: PART 2 (PG-13): If youve come this far with the young adult mega-franchise, youre gonna go the whole way. I predict an opening weekend of all the money in the world. SFI: Id make an analogy, but this movie has sucked up all the worlds creative energy this week. WINNIE THE POOH (G): Sure, its unnecessary, but who can be mad at Pooh Bear, especially with voice talent like John Cleese, Craig Ferguson and Tom Kenny on board? SFI: A nice nap with your favorite stuffed animal. JULY 22 CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER (PG-13): Even though star Chris Evans has already starred in a horribly botched Marvel Comics _ franchise, Im sorta excited for this one. The trailer looks OK, and Ev- ans earnestness seems to suit Steve Rogers just fine. Direc- tor Joe Johnston (Jumanji, The Wolfm though. SFI: Weaving through the an) is a hack, Independence Day parade on your skateboard, FRIENDS WITH BEN- EFITS (NOT YET RATED): Mila Kunis and Justin Tim- berlake. Romantic comedy. - Next. SFI: Next. ANOTHER EARTH (NOT YET RATED): Nerds _ (like me) are always looking for the next smart, low-bud- get sci-fi film (like Primer or Moon), and this one, about the discovery about a _ parallel Earth, emerged from Sundance with an intriguing, geeky aura. SFI: An afternoon satel ing old Space 1999 epi- sodes. JULY 29 COWBOYS VS) ALIENS (NOT YET RAT- ED): Director Jon Favreau (Iron Man and Iron Man 2) knows what hes do- ing in the action/adventure genre, and the preview for this sci-fi/action flick (the title - _ should clue you in) is awe- some. Throw in a cast includ- ing Daniel Craig, Harrison - Ford and Sam Rockwell, and youve got as close to a sure thing as I see this summer. SFI: A ride on the Astro- sphere at Funtown. (Those whove been there know how much fun it is.) 7 CRAZY, STUPID LOVE (PG-13): All great comic actors knock the occa- sional dramatic role out of the park. Now its Steve Carells turn as a jilted husband taking dating lessons from younger slicky boy Ryan Gosling in this dramedy, and, as hes shown in Dan in Real Life, Carells able to bring the soul- fulness. SFI: Getting maudlin drunk with your funniest. friend. THE SMURFS (NOT YET RATED -- IM GUESS- ING A HARD R): No. No no no no no No NO! SFI: No. AUG. 5 director RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES (NOT YET RATED): While it has to be better than Tim Burtons mis- begotten remake, this sci-fi tale of how the damn, dirty apes knocked us off the top of the evolutionary pyramid has me nervous. Mainly because James Franco seems less cred- ible as a genius scientist than as a guy giggling at YouTube videos of monkeys in funny SFL A visit to the ZOO, casting suspicious sideways glances at the monkeys. LAE CHANGE-UP (NOT YET RATED): Genu- ine funny guys at the service of a hackneyed premise, Jason Bateman and Ryan Reynolds swap bodies somehow so that harried, married Bateman can pursue comely co-worker Ol- ivia Wilde in swinging Reyn- olds body. Is there any way they'll emerge triumphant? Well, theyre funny, and the mostly succeeded with Wedding Crashers. . SEL Watching. Vice Ver: a with Girls Gone Wild on sence siete ~ AUG. 12. 30 MINUTES OR LESS - (NOT YET RATED): Jesse Eisenberg brings his geeky charm to this dark comedy about a pizza delivery guy whos strapped with ex- plosives by some fledgel- fis crooks and forced to rob bank. From Eisenbergs Pe rabielnee director, look for some similarly quirky laughs, especially with alt- comedy icons such as Danny McBride, Nick Swardson and Aziz Ansari on hand. SFI: Pizza and a brick of firecrackers. 5 RHE HELP: (PG-13): A small towns thrown into turmoil when its unspoken , 1960s racism is exposed by an unlikely friendship. I like the cast (Emma Stone, Viola Da- vis), but this might fall victim to the dreaded preachys. SFI: A well-meaning lec- ture in an un-air conditioned church basement. DONT BE AFRAID OF THE DARK (R): Guillermo del Toro (Pans Labyrinth) wrote this horror remake about a familys new house filled with skittering littl monsters. The original, while cheesy, gave mie the heebie- jeebies as a kid, and del Toro can only up the creep factor. SFI: Nice cold chills on a hot day.
