WESTERN CAROLINIAN SPORTS August 20, 2010 WCU football team to have 11 weekends of action From Staff Reports Five home dates including the 35th edition of the Battle for the Old Mountain Jug against Appalachian State on October 23 highlight the 2010 Western Carolina Cata- mount football schedule. . The ll-game schedule opens with a pre-Labor Day road meeting with North Car- olina State in Raleigh on Sat- urday, Sept. 4 and concludes 11 weeks later with the Cata- mounts traveling to Elon on Saturday, Nov. 20. We think this is a very competitive schedule, said head coach Dennis Wagner. Playing North Carolina State is big for our fan base and exciting for our players. The Catamounts are scheduled to open the 2010 season at N.C. State, rekin- dling a 24-year old rivalry against the in-state foe. WCU last faced the Wolfpack in the 2003 season-opener for both squads, falling to the then l4th-ranked Pack, 59-20, at Carter-Finley Stadium. One week later, Western Carolina will open the home portion of its 2010 season by host- ing the NCAA Division II Tusculum Pioneers out of the South Atlantic Conference on Sept. 1] in the lone night game scheduled at Whitmire Stadium. The home-opening weekend will also see WCU induct its 21st class into its Athletics Hall of Fame. The Catamounts will then round out the non-conference portion of its 2010 regular season by visiting Gardner- Webb in Boiling Springs, N.C,, on Saturday, Sept..18./:>: Western Carolina opens Southern Conference play Western Carolinas football team held on the final weekend of Sep- tember, traveling to Elon on Sept. 25. The 29-game slate in- cludes 15 home dates and match-ups with eight teams that played in postseason tournaments in 2010. The club starts off the season by playing its first eight games in the state of North Carolina. The Lady Catamounts will tip-off against four teams that participated in the NCAA Tournament, including North Carolina, James Madison, Florida State and 2010 South- ern Conference Tournament Champion Chattanooga. East Carolina and Samford were in the 2010 Postseason WNIT and Appalachian State and College of Charleston were in the Womens Basket- ball Invitational. Our schedule includes eight teams that made post- season appearances last year, which will prepare us for a tough Southern Confer ence slate, Middleton said. Pm very excited about our teams challenging schedule this season and the number of great home match-ups we will have for our fans at the Ramsey Center. Western Carolina opens the season with a Nov. 5 ex- hibition game against Asbury University out of Wilmore, Ky. The game will pit sister vs. sister as Catamount senior guard Kendra Carroll will play opposite her sister Laura Carroll, a sophomore for the Eagles. I have never played against my sister, she has always been on my side of the court, Carroll said. It is definitely going to be dif- ferent, but 1 am going to en- joy the experience in playing against her in my final year of playing basketball at Western Carolina. Non-conference home games begin with the Univer- sity of Richmond on Nov. 12 followed by a match-up with East Carolina Nov. 14. The Catamounts will also wel- come Florida State (Dec. 4), Charlotte (Dec. 8) and Colo- rado State (Dec. 28). Western Carolinas Southern Confer- ence home-slate begins with a Nov. 29 game against Sam- ford. The Lady Catamounts will head out on the road to face non-conference opponents UNC Asheville (Nov. 17), North Carolina (Noy. 21), Georgia State (Dec, 8) and James Madison (Dec. 30). The schedule also includes 20 home-and-home contests with Southern Conference opponents. From top to bottom the SoCon continues to get bet- ter each year. Last season alone, we sent four teams to postseason play, Middleton said. This years Catamount team is a mix of skilled, ex- perienced returners and five eager newcomers. We look forward to growing as a team and putting ourselves in posi- tion to compete for a champi- onship. ae s first practi met. Southern Conference team Samford on Oct. 9 and get back into conference play at Wofford on Oct. 16. WCU finishes eight straight weeks of play on Oct. 23 in the annual Battle for the Old Mountain Jug with rival Ap- palachian State. The season concludes with two road games and one home matchupall conference games. Western Carolina goes to Furman on Nov. 6, plays versus Georgia Southern for Hall of Fame of the 2010 season ona Saturday afternoon on the Bob Waters Field.
