  • Page 11 Western Carolinian April 17, 2007 SPORTS Lady Cats Take First Conference Series By Jason Lineberger Sports Writer CULLOWHEEThe Western Caro- lina Lady Catamount softball team took its first conference series of the year by beating the UNC Greens- boro Spartans two out of three games April 5-6. The win was a big step in the right direction as the Catamounts have struggled through the first two thirds of the season. The series also set-up a unique milestone in the short history of the Lady Catamount program. In the sec- ond game of the series Junior Lauren Ross put herself in the record books by belting the 22" homerun of her ca- reer, breaking current teammate Ash- ley Adams 21 homerun record. When looking back at the se- ries however, its the wins and quality of play that mattered most to West- ern. It was a glimpse at what the team could accomplish as time goes on and the team gains more experience with first year head coach Christine Hor- nak. In the first game, which was halted by weather on Saturday, it was _again Ross who made a huge differ- ence, this time with her pitching. Ross recorded a season high eight strikeouts in a.complete game. Junior Heather Pritchard also made a big contribu- tion, hitting a grand slam in the sixth inning, her first homer in two years. The Lady Cats took.the game:10 to, 5.) The firstgamezof Sundays: doubleheader was a chess match, with ' both teams going back and forth the entire game. The Catamounts scored early in the first inning scoring two runs off an RBI double by junior Stephanie Beatty. UNC Greensboro came right back in their half of the inning, hitting two homeruns, one a solo shot and the other scoring two. In the second inning with the bases loaded, Western reclaimed the lead with an RBI single by freshman Amber Hawkins. The Spartans an- swered in the third, tying the game by scoring a runner from third base off of a ground ball. After a scoreless fourth, West- ern retook the lead in the fifth as Mol- lie Fowler hit a two run shot to bring the lead to 6-4. Once again however, UNCG retied the game with a two run sixth inning. Not to be. outdone however, the Lady Cats scored anoth- er run after three walks and an error by the Spartans. With a 1 run lead and the series ready to be taken, once again Ross made her presence known by coming in as reliever in the final in- nings. She allowed no hits in 2.2 in- nings and stopped any thoughts of a Spartan comeback. In the final game of the dou- bleheader the Lady Cats couldnt tame the Spartans offensive spurts scoring three in the first, two in the fourth, and two in the sixth. UNCG took the game 5 to 7. As the final stretch of the sea- son starts, the Catamounts look to take the success of the series and turn it into more victories. You can still catch the Catamounts on their home field for three more series. Western hosts the College of Charleston with a doubleheader April 12 and the final game April 13. April 26 the Cata- mounts host Furman in a doublehead- er, with the final game being the fol- lowing day. Finally the Catamounts close the season with a two game double header against Winston Salem State April 29. Ryan Sarda Sports Writer In her four seasons at Western Carolina, Jessika Johnson has been shining for the Lady Catamounts on the basketball court and is now out leap- ing opponents in her final season on the Catamount Track and Field team. Johnson, a senior, who also plays basketball under head coach Kellie Harper for the Lady Cats, has brought home several accomplishments this season for the Catamount Track and Field team including two straight Southern Conference Indoor Champi- onships in the high jump and one out- door title as well. During the Indoor Track sea- son, the Catamounts captured the 2008 Southern Conference Indoor Champi- onships held at Clemson University on the weekend of February 29-March 1. Both the men and the women claimed the crown for the first time in her four years with the school, with Johnson claiming one of the 14 victories of the weekend for both the men and the women. The track team's performance this year has been great. We won the In- door SoCon title for the first time since Ive been here, said Johnson. I think we have always performed well but we always just short of winning until this year. In the high jump, Johnson cap- tured the conference crown leaping 1.66 meters to beat out Appalachian State freshman Rebecca Hazeltine, who jumped 1.63 meters. In her first outdoor event of the season on March 29, Johnson made her season debut and was victorious at the Western Carolina Invitational held at the Catamount Athletic Complex. She won the high jump leaping 1.60 meters, beating out Molly Kennedy of Wake Forest. J think I have been doing ok so far, explained Johnson, I won the high jump in the Indoor SoCon, but for outdoor I need to start jumping higher to get the same results. The Catamount Track Team will travel on April 12 to Clemson for the Solid Orange Classic and will re- turn home for the Catamount Classic the following week. The outdoor Southern Confer- ence Championships will be held in Cullowhee at the Catamount Athletic Complex on April 26", and Johnson is confident that she can add another championship trophy to her huge col- lection before graduation. In order to win outdoor I will need to jump like I have done in the past. I will have to jump with the right technique and do the little things right, said Johnson. Ten days prior to her outdoor debut, the Lady Catamount basketball team traveled to Murfeesboro, Tennes- see to play Middle Tennessee State in the first round of Womens National In- vitational Tournament. Johnson did not expect that game to be her last wearing a Catamount uniform, but the team fell 104-69, ending their season with a 25-9 overall record. - I was disappointed and so was the team. We know we did not play our best and it hurt because I did not want my last game to end up like that, said Johnson. After graduation, Johnson plans on moving back to her native Atlanta and trying to find a job. Later on down the road, she would like to attend grad- uate school. Winning the Southern Confer- ence Tournament, playing in the NCAA Tournament under Harper, winning the regular season Southern Conference Championship, advancing to the sec- ond round of the WNIT, and also win- ning two straight Indoor SoCon Indoor Track and Field championships and one outdoor, Johnson has had one winning experience in her four years at West- ern and she would not change it for the world. T loved it here at WCU. I had great teammates and coaches in both sports and I would not have gone to an- other school, said Johnson. I believe I had a very successful four years at Western and I am glad I picked to go here. !
