The problem is your dorm is all the way across cam- pus. You have not seen a cat Tran for hours. It is dark and you see a strange man running towards you. What do you do? As many of you know, a stu- dent on the UNC campus was mur- dered during our spring break. Accord- ing to CNN.com, Eve Carson, 22, was found shot to death in the early hours of March 5 in a suburban neighborhood near the UNC at Chapel Hill campus. Her car was found the next day in an- other neighborhood, close to where she lived with roommates. When turning on the news and hearing this information I was very dis- -turbed and thought to myself, what if it were me? I sat and wondered how it happened and why this happen to a stu- dent. Then I thought that this could eas- ily happen on Westerns campus. Then that raised the question of what do we | _ do when something like this h. ap pens? : All Images Photographed by: Carolyn Ellison How much protection do we really have as students? In the last issue the Western Carolinian ran an article that spoke about how the campus communicates in case someone was to open fire on the school grounds. It is a scary thought to think that someone could really open fire on this campus killing many stu- dents. Not only does this raise a con- cern but what about the protection of a student themselves. I am sure everyone has those late nights where they have to get a paper turned in and spending late hours in the library. Or maybe even in some cases the staff members staying late in order to get the student newspa- per out on time. I always wonder if they got back okay or even myself. I won- der if anything will happen in my short walk to my dorm. I do understand that we do have a lot of campus police on campus, but are they really always at the right area they need to be? I also understand that sometimes we will not have that protec- - tion all the time from the campus police but there should be something incase of an emergency that were to happen to a single student on campus. Of course everyone says make sure you walk in groups and carry your cell phone at all times, but what can the campus itself do to protect its students. Many of these questions have risen throughout college campuses in the U.S. We ask how safe are col- lege campuss? Now, instead of going to class everyday with no worries, we worry about if we will get to our desti- nation safely. It is a scary thought that we live through everyday. It is scary to think anyone could come up to us and hold a gun to our backs asking for mon- ey, our car or other means to them. I ask the University itself, what policies do we have to protect our students? What changes are we making after the shoot- ings of VT and Northern Illinois to pro- tect the student body? I hope there are changes coming to WCU for us to pro- tect one another and make this campus feel safe. same thing. If you say hey to someone who is having a bad day, it would change their day for the better, and that might influence them to do the same. Sarah Moore
