  • Page 13 Western Carolinian SPORTS February 28, 2007 2008 Baseball Preview By: Joel Gerber Sports Editor Its baseball season again, and that means one of the most exciting sports that Western Carolina University offers is back around. With a new coaching staff and some sluggers and pitchers return- ing, this looks to be another | promising season for the Cat- amounts. College of Charleston was picked first in the South- ern Conference preseason coaches* poll, with 10 first place votes and 170 total votes. WCU baseball was as close a second as possi- ble with eight first place votes and 160 total votes. These two teams tied for last years regular season title, but will not face each other until the last three games of the season. Bobby Moranda, the new head _baseball coach at WCU, brings lots of experience to the table. He has been a baseball coach for 21 years, the last 18 spent at Georgia Tech as an associate head coach and pitching coach. He has been part of ten conference champion- ships and ten NCAA tournament ap- pearances. Under Moranda, 12 pitch- ers have been selected in the first five rounds of the Major League Baseball draft, so the man knows pitching. Going into this season, I feel our strength is going to be our pitching staff," said coach Moranda. "We return Lady C By: Jason Lineberger Sports Writer On Feb. 16 against Wofford, the Western Carolina womens bas- ketball team made school history by winning twenty games in two con- secutive seasons. Surprisingly, that wasnt the most important part about their game. The day belonged to bringing awareness about breast cancer through the Womens Basketball Coaches As- sociations (WBCA) Think Pink program. The WBCA was founded by current N.C. State womens bas- ketball coach Kay Yow, who has battled with breast cancer since 1987. The Think Pink program started last year as a way to bring awareness of breast cancer to as many people as possible. The program has been a huge success with nearly 1,000 col- lege and high school womens teams participating in the program in 2008, as well as 20 different conferences. Fans were encouraged to wear pink to the contest in honor of the cause, and coaches even carried pink whistles. As for the game, Westerns 87-65 win improved their record to 12-2 in the Southern Conference, and 20-6 overall. Though the final score doesnt indicate it, the first half of the ball game was an exciting one for those in attendance. Eight lead changes and nine ties made for an interesting battle down the stretch. Western utilized halftime adjustments however to pull away in the second ats Reach a Milestone Senior Catcher Blake Murphy anchors the Catamounts on offense and defense. all three weekend starters from a year ago, with two posting All-SoCon type of numbers last season. Offensively, we lost a lot of firepower to graduation and to the draft. We will have to find a way to score runs a little differently this sea- son. Western leads the league in pre- season all conference picks with five. Two of these were consensus first team selections, and the other three were se- lected to the second team. Atop the list is Waynesville native Blake Murphy at catcher and junior left-handed pitcher Drew Saberhagen. Both these players were consensus All-SoCon for the sec- ond consecutive year. The second team selections were senior center fielder Barrett Shaft and left-handed pitchers Tyler Sexton and Chris Masters. Last year Murphy was one of the most productive hitters in the na- half for the convincing victory, going on a 12-1 run at one point during the | second half. One of the most impressive statistics of the contest were the Lady Cats shooting percentage of 53.7, compared to Woffords 34.2 in the second half. d Freshman Emily Clarke led all scores with 14 points, followed closely by junior Lauren Powell with 13 points. Others adding major contributions in- cluded senior Ashley Pellom with 10 points and freshman Heather Swayne with 11. Guard Monique Dawson had a career high eight assists and Kris- ten Feemster had a career high 11 re- bounds. As a whole, it was a great team effort by the Lady Catamounts. With the impressive win, the Catamounts continue to look strong heading to the final stages of the sea- son in preparation for the conference tournament. Standing in their way at the top of the conference are the Chat- tanooga Lady Mocs. The Mocs re- mained undefeated in conference play at 15-0, and hold an impressive 23-3 . overall record. The Lady Cats lost to Chattanooga early in the season by a close five point margin, and look to return the favor in their February 28th meeting in Tennessee. As the Catamounts continue their strong run into the postseason, it will be interesting to see how they fair. They have a great shot at a conference title and potentially a birth into the NCAA tournament. For those want- ing to catch Westerns games, you can listen to every contest online at cata- mountsports.com. tion. He hit .367, third-best on the team and top ten in the ' conference. He was 3rd in the Southern conference for triples (16), 4th in RBIs (66), and 5th in total bases (151). Saberhagen led the So- Con last year with an ERA of 2.87, and was 4th in wins with nine. He pitched 106 innings in 16 appearances in 2007, never pitching fewer than six innings per game. After los- ing the opening game last year, Saberhagen put together the impressive streak of nine wins in arow. He lead the team in wins, strikeouts(42), and ERA and held opponents to a .280 hitting percentage. Our schedule is obviously very chal- lenging, said Coach Moranda. A lot of the teams on our schedule had tre- mendous seasons a year ago and are pe- rennial powers in college baseball. My philosophy wherever I have been is if you want to be the best then you have to play the best. This schedule will help prepare us for Southern Conference play, as well as for post-season tourna- ment play as you learn a lot about your team and your program." Western Carolina recovered nicely for the 2008 season after having three starters drafted last year in Kenny Smith, Jonathan Greene, and Steven Strausbaugh. Also head coach Todd Raleigh is now the head coach for the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. Want your Opinion to be known? Correctan published.
