  • ed yr ey ST YC Nl Catamount Basketball Optimistic About Success This Season @ @ By Ryan Sarda WGnewsmagazine The WCU mens basketball program has officially opened their 2007-2008 season with a 102-61 exhibition victory over Milligan College on Halloween night. Picked to finish third in the preseason Southern Conference poll, the Catamounts are very optimistic about their success this season and are looking to prove the doubters wrong and bring a championship banner to Cullowhee this year. It takes discipline, commitment, and everyone should be on the same page. As long as we all play our roles and stay within ourselves | think this teams success will be a lot greater than past years, said Negus McKenna, one of only three seniors on the team this year. In the exhibition game against Milligan, the Catamounts came out on fire in the first half taking a 54-26 lead into the locker room with them at intermission. Six Catamounts finished the game in double digits and they were led by sophomores Nick Aldridge and Brandon Giles, who each had 15 points in the contest. Freshman Camden Miller came off the bench and scored 15 as well for WCU. McKenna, who had 12 points in the exhibition game against Milligan, believes that Westerns team is a lot deeper than it has been In years, and anyone can step up and play a determining factor in winning the game. | don't think there are any outright difference makers on the team. As you saw last year, you never know who is going to step up on any given night. And, with the weapons we have on this team, each of us play an integral part in the teams success, said the senior from Montreal, Quebec. Coaching the Catamounts is Larry Hunter, who enters his third season as head coach for The Cats. In his previous two seasons, Hunter has compiled a 24-37 record as head coach at Western. The Catamounts only lost two players from last seasons team to graduation in Antonio Russell and Kyle Greathouse. With all of the returning players from last years team, and four additional freshmen, the Cats have the depth to make a run at a Southern Conference Championship this season. Playing for Coach Hunter is exciting. Just to get direction from someone who knows that much about the game of basketball is a blessing. We are always stressing that we need to put our past behind us and deal with today, said McKenna. On top of their strenuous Southern Conference schedule, the Catamounts have some tough non-conference opponents this year. They play Division | schools such as: NC State, Illinois, Indiana, and Cincinnati. Larry Hunter, prior to coming to WCU, spent four seasons as an assistant under Herb Sendek at North Carolina State. On Dec. 29, the Catamounts will battle the Wolfpack at the RBC Center in Raleigh. Those are always good games to play because it helps show where everyone is at individually, as well as collectively, said McKenna. McKenna believes that ifthe Catamounts can play their best basketball and be on top of their game, then they can definitely pull off a big upset over some of the non-conference foes. As long as we play to our strengths, | think we have an opportunity of beating anyone. | know those are big schools, but as a team | think we will be ready and eager to step up to the challenge, said McKenna. Following their huge exhibition match- up against Milligan, the Catamounts will hit the hardwood again on November 9 for the Peggy Cronin Classic in Cincinnati, Ohio. Western will start the tournament off against Bowling Green University. Two seasons ago, Hunter secured his first victory as head coach of Western against Bowling Green, and they will be looking for the same result this time around. For now we take things one game at a time. We just beat Milligan, and now we are looking forward to our tournament in Ohio next weekend, said McKenna. Western Carolina womens basketball 2007-08 preseason preview By Joel Gerber WCnewsmagazine Last season was a storybook year for Lady Catamount basketball. The Cats won the Southern Conference regular season and also reached the Southern Conference Tournament finals, earning thema berthin the WNIT Womens Basketball Tournament. WCU reached the second round of the tournament before losing to Virginia Tech. All of this might inspire lesser teams to coast on past successes, but not the Catamounts. Hard work and dedication have brought this team together and prepared them for even greater success in the 2007-08 season. Head Coach Kellie Harper returns for her fourth season at Western Carolina University. Harper has shown great success with the WCU basketball program leading them to a SoCon championship in two of her four years as basketball coach. Harper believes keeping a high energy level will be important for her teams success this year. | have been pleased with our intensity over the first week of practice, said Coach Harper.
