  • i Vk mi rs : 4 Ms 7" ra ba I a Roxaway creates the By Margaret Hester * WCnewsmagazine This is it. No more complaining about having nothing to do in the Cullowhee/Syiva area, Roxaway is the party that everyone has been looking for. By now, you've probably heard about Roxaway music festival. But Just in case you have been under a rock for the past few months: Roxaway is a music festival, which will be held on Gorges Music Park in beautiful Lake Toxaway, NC. Not only is this a music festival, it's a festival that has been created by Western students, for Western students (and others) to come, party and enjoy great local music. Showcasing their dedication to the music and ability to party like rock stars", the Roxaway production team arranged for our interview to be held at 10:30 p.m. on a Wednesday, night. It was obvious this was not going to be the usual interview. to speak with the Western Carolinian about their upcoming event. Walking into a smoke-filled, empty room of a small apartment near campus, the only thing that could be heard was the loud music of a band called Buck Naked; whom were practicing in the back room. Roxaway is not the typical hippy, jam-band, music festival celebr 1g peace and love that comes to mind when one thinks of a mountain festival. In fact, Roxaway is a festival that offers so much more. Obviously music is the main focus of Roxaway. However, as mentioned, it's not all like what would be expected. Of course, there are the usual jam-bands, but there are also going to be folk, bluegrass, rock, indie Tock, rapoore, techno and so much more. Not only is this a great fusion, but all of the bands are homegrown. These bands include Cullowhee's own After Dark, Buck Naked, The Feel, and Friend and Fiends. Ashevilles Afromotive. DJ Irie will bring the techno side to the mountains, and Chapel Hill's favorite, Dirty5Thirty, will rock the crowd with their rapcore style. Not only is this festival fun for the crowd, the bands love playing at Roxaway. Playing music at the Gorges Music Park is the most fun I've never had in my life, said Andrew Hoover, director of Roxaway, and a member of Buck Naked. Therefore, there is no doubt that everyone can find something, music-wise, at Roxaway. The best part about Roxaway may not be the variety of mi but the fact that everyone has the chance to actually party with the bands. That's right! The band members are actually concert go-ers themselves. So everyone has a chance to meet, camp, and party with their favorite bands. We're all there for the same reason: to play music, enjoy music and have a great time, said Vincent Parham, a member of The Feel and a Roxaway festival attendee. What other festival can offer partying with the band at no extra charge? Since Roxaway is comprised of mostly local bands, and local people, it has become a great way for people new to the area to get to know others. While at Roxaway, one can meet new friends, and still actually hang out with them after the festival! Not only is it a great way to branch out, its also a great way to network. The people in charge of Roxaway are actual Western students, with real connections. These people include: Andrew Hoover, Charles Ward, Eric Reid, Meghan Adams, David Moore, and more. So no matter what aspect you are interested in, whether it's helping out with Roxaway, playing music, or meeting the right people, Roxaway can help anyone find their place. But all this talk about the music and the people cannot begin to match up with the outdoor activities that are available at Gorges Music. Park. Roxaway can offer everyone some of the best hiking, camping, and viewing trails that Western North Carolina has to offer. Gorges Music Park has just been re-landscaped to offer a better view of the mountains and WesternCarolinian perfect rock star party opportunity for all Surrounding area. Plus, a hike to the waterfall found on-site can be just the thing you need after a night of enjoying great music! To put Roxaway simply, is the best way to spend your weekend: partying like a rock star. Obviously Roxaway is not the usual festival, and it's not for the customary festival attendee. So, all of you freshmen out there, people looking for something new, and usual festival lovers, come to Roxaway and enjoy 15 bands, in two days, and on over 120 acres of Western North Carolina mountains.
