  • oO = zg < aN w a & 2 = a - ei World War X By Zach McKeown WEnewsmagazine General Richard B, Myers led the way by leading the first Presentation of the year in the Fine and Performing Arts center. Entitled War X, the retired General held a series of sessions, wherein he spoke on the controversial War on Terror. An exclusive student session was held earlier in the day for Western students, followed by a public session later in the evening, General Myers spoke in detail about his time as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Secretary of Defense, and the principal military advisor to the president. After discussing his impressive resum, the General welcomed any questions from interested students. Early during the presentation, General Myers dispelled popular myths about the current administration, such as rumors involving the President ignoring his advisors and various conspiracies involving setting up governments in countries such as Afghanistan and iraq, He made it abundantly clear that not only did the President and his associates listen to the advice of those with similar or differing opinions, bbut they were encouraged to speak plainly and honestly at all times. When asked about his personal opinion on the war on terror, General Myers replied, I believe the threat from violent extremism is a bigger threat to our freedom than our own Civil War. In addition to that, he spoke more specifically of the war, calling it, Asymmetric warfare at its best Questions from students covered a wide range of subjects, all of which General Myers answered with an honesty uncharacteristic of @ politician. General Myers spoke in detail about recent acts the Mickey Rooney visits Cullowhee By Carrie Petrea Wenewsmagazine For those of you who were in the dark, Mickey Rooney, one of Hollywood's last living legends, visited Cullowhee this past Sunday, Sept. 17 with his wife, Jan, to perform his latest one-man, one-wife show, Let's Put on a Show." Rooney, originally named Joe Yule, Jr, began his 86-year acting career when he was only one year old. His father, Joe Yule, was a vaudeville actor and one day, while his father was doing a show, Rooney crawled behind him and sneezed. The spotlights tumed to Rooney, who began to play his little toy harmonica. The audience laughed, and from that day forward, a star was born Throughout his career, Rooney starred in over 250 films, his latest coming out in December of this year, won an Emmy, Honorary Oscar for Lifetime Achievement, a special Juvenile Oscar he shared with Deana Durbin in 1939, and two o Golden Globes. But he'll be the firstto tell you his proudest achievement was when he was awarded his Bronze Star. : This guy has done it al. He rubbed elbows with Marilyn Monroe = even gave her nickname when she was still Norma Jeane Baker was best friends with Judy Garland and married eight times one of his, marriages only lasted 100 days! While he spoke in favor of monitoring telephone conversations, he was careful to specify that he only believed monitoring phone calls from places outside of the United States coming in was necessary. One particularly bold student went so far as to compare the United States spreading democracy through less-privileged countries to the actions of the terrorist threat itself. General Myers, while somewhat upset by the comparison, replied, I don't think there's a more noble thing to do than to give people the ability to do what they want to do. in addition to answering student questions, General Myers spoke about the war on terror in a broader sense. A firm believer in the actions taking place overseas, the General went to great lengths to establish that the United States is taking great steps and that our presence in hostile countries such as Iraq is not only welcome by the Populace, but is absolutely necessary in an effort o establish a more Secure world for future generations. Shortly after the question and answer session, the General took time to shake hands with interested students and briefly spoke to the media present Regardless of your personal opinion on the controversial topic, General Myers presented many interesting ideas and a fascinating insider point of view on the current world situation. War X was an excellent opportunity not only for Western Students but members of the entire community to broaden their horizons and learn a little more about the world in which we currently reside, "We're coming because we love the state. Let's, Put-on.a,Show!, featured Mr. Rooney and his wife, Jan Rooney, and the lives they've shared The program highlighted some of Mickey's Personal memories in show biz, and he even Cracked a few jokes. My hair used to be wavy. Now it's just beach, cracked Rooney, Jan Rooney sang a few songs, including songs by Patsy Cline, with her husband of 34 years. Her voice sounded as strong as ever as she and Mickey sang, Let's Call the Whole Thing Off. A tribute to Judy Garland was also highlighted, complete with video clips. *It has its sad and happy moments, its a story enveloped around his life, so of CCOUFSe it's going to have those emotions in i said Mrs, Rooney, who cracked on her husband a few times throughout the show. Alin all, it was a once-in-avlfetime experience. How many college students can say they shaked the hand Of a man who once partied with Judy Garland and Maryn Monroe? Though the mans way past his prime, dont let that fact get you down ~ he certainly isn't. He's stil kickin and with his new movie coming out in December, the world will know Mickey Rooney again.
