The Lady Cats would answer by going on a 7-0 run to cut the advantage to 3, 45-42, with every point during that run coming courtesy of sophomore Monique Dawson, who also made Western's only 3-pointer of the game. The Lady Cats were able to get within two twice in the game, but could never pull any closer as Wofford went on for the 5-point win. Dawson led the way for the Lady Cats with a career-high 20 points to go along with 11 rebounds for her first career double-double. Freshman Teshymia Tillman, who came into the game to replace the injured Ashley Pellom, scored 16 points, dished out 3 assists, and had 3 steals. Western went a dismal 1-12 from 3-point land for a season- low 8.3 % overall. However, the Lady Cats did out-rebound the Lady Terriers, 50-45. Four Wofford players reached double figures in the game. Photo by Mark Haskett WCU Women lose to College of Charleston By Sarah Taylor Ryckman WGnewsmagazine The number 10 jersey worn by Western sophomore Monique Dawson is one to keep track of in future basketball games of the Lady Cats. Despite WCU's 3-15 (3-6 Southern Conference) record, the sophomore guard out of Charlotte, NC has led her team with career high numbers for the better half of the season. Dawson's presence on the court is threatening to opponents and was especially helpful on January 23, when the Lady Cats faced the College of Charleston in a Souther Conference match. Despite Western's 69-59 loss to the Cougars, Dawson led the Catamounts with 15 points, six rebounds, and three steals. Wester has relied on the sophomore's abilities in transition offense, which was apparent in Monday nights game. Dawson made two back-to-back threes off of College of Charleston turnovers. The loss was only the second in the last 18 match ups between the two teams. Some of Dawson's success is due to tight defensive pressure on freshman standouts, Lauren Powell and Teshymia Tilman, both whose standout performances just two days prior led Western over Furman in Southern Conference play. However, College of Charleston held tight reins on the freshman, allowing four points from Powell and only three points from Tillman, keeping WCU from ever taking a lead, The lone senior for the Lady Cats, Teyawna Hardy, put up eight points for WCU, and added seven rebounds. Sophomores Ashley Pellom and Chevon Keith also added valuable points for WCU with a combined total of 15. The last home game of the season (February 20) will be a rematch of the WCU CofC game. With the performances of Dawson, Tillman, Hardy, Pellom, Keith and Powell at career high levels, the Lady Cats look to defeat the Cougars at home.
