Western Carolina University and the Progression of Diversity: 1957-Present. Road: Paving the Way for Change Weiter Glory Road is a movie that encompasses the fundamentals cof basketball, the sacrifices of athletes and the breaking down of racial barriers. This movie follows the true story of the legendary 1965-66 Texas Western Miners on their journey to claiming the NCAA tournament ttle. In 1965, Hall of Famer Don Haskins recruited affordable talent for his underdog team, with no consideration to race. in a predominately white sport, the Texas Western team integrated seven Aftican Americans and five Caucasians. Although others before had made significant contributions to this milestone, Coach Haskin's team eventually produced history's first all African-American starting lineup in collegiate or professional basketball. In the 1966 NCAA Championship game, the Miners upset Adolph Rupp's Kentucky Wildcats. Rupp was notorious for winning as well as for coaching all white teams. His 1966 Wildcats, defeated by the Texas Western team, included three-time MVP Pat Riley, who now coaches the Miami Heat, home of more than a few remarkable African-American athletes. Directed by James Gartner, the film scored $16.9 million on opening weekend after its release date this year on January 13". The movie contains some true-to-life characters on and off the court. The highest scorer in 3 out of 5 of the NCAA championship games, Bobby Jo Hil, is played by Derek Luke, who may be known to most as Boobie Miles, another essential athlete in Friday Night Lights. Schin A.S. Kerr is the actor who plays David Daddy D Lattin, an impressive body who led the team with 114 personal fouls, scoring double digits in 24 out of the 29 games he played with Texas Wester. ; Coach Adolph Rupp of the Kentucky Wildcats was depicted by the distinguished Jon Voight, while Coach Don Haskins is portrayed by Josh Lucas who gained thirty-five pounds for the role. The real Don Haskins coached for Texas Western University, which later was named The University of Texas at El Paso, for 38 years. In 1997, in compensation for his passionate dedication to the sport, Coach Haskins was enshrined to The Basketball Hall of Fame. The movie displays the struggles of the Miners in their journey to win the prestigious tournament but most importantly in their journey to win respect. The respect gained through their success delves far deeper than their twelve-man team. The emotions invoked through this flim barely scratch the surface of the civil rights movement. The issues of this film can be compared to those of Remember the Titans, another Disney film also produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. Glory Road portrays racial slurs and hate crimes which illustrate how the Miners were mocked and ridiculed as a competitive team. In tum these events were catalysts for the teams accomplishments. The film Glory Road represents a valuable piece of history in sports, as well as in our country. Just as the, Miners were @ success on the court, this film is a success in accurately resenting the racial tones of the time. EN IWW
