  • September 13, 2000 SPORTS WESTERN CAROLINIAN 19 Soccer Trounces Trojans in Home Debut by Daniel Hooker Sports Editor One year ago, head coach Debbie Hensley and the Western Carolina University Lady Catamounts traveled to Alabama to take on Troy State. They left with the first- victory in WCU women's soccer history. Monday afternoon, the Trojans of TSU came to Cullowhee where they were decisively defeated 3-0, giving the Lady Cats their fourth win of the season and a win in WCU's home opener. It was also the third shutout victory this year. Just as Nardia Moore and Yasmin Morton dominated the Trojans as freshmen, a new pair of freshmen sensations did a number on Troy State in 2000. Brandy Ossmann (2) and Jordan Howell recorded goals pacing the Lady Cats. Hensley was pleased with her team's win, but she knows that it will take that and much more once they get into conference play. "We had some good opportunities that we didn't take advantage of," said Hensley. "Troy State got into a defensive situation. They sat back, clogging up the middle and made it hard for us to score." She added, "We wanted to keep possession. The more we have the ball, the better we are." Western Carolina (4-1-1) did just that, keeping the ball on Troy State's side of the field the majority of the match and getting off 30 shots on goal and limiting TSU to a mere six. Twenty-one minutes into the contest, freshman Brandy Ossmann joined her freshman counterparts Jordan Howell, Felicia Wilson, and Lauren Bramlett in the WCU record book, scoring her first intercollegiate goal. Sophomore Morgan Foresman recorded her first assist on the season on the goal. Nearly 26 minutes later, Ossmann, with the assist from sophomore Kelly Barker, added her second goal of the game, season, and career. "It was.a great game for Brandy (Ossmann), scoring her first goals in college. She adds a lot with her tremendous throw-in and she is just an absolute worker on the field," said Hensley. Rounding out the scoring was freshman Howell, who tallied her team-leading eighth goal of the season unassisted on a free kick. Sophomore goalkeeper Mandi Tinsley recorded her second shutout of the year, stopping all four of Troy State's shots. "Mandi's been pretty consistent with a year of experience. She can punt the ball as far as any girl I' ve ever seen and that's a big asset." The Lady Catamounts used Jordan Howell's second hat trick of her young college career in defeating Indiana State over the weekend, 5-0. Sophomores Morgan Foresman and Yasmin Morton also added goals in the victory. Freshmen Felicia Wilson and Lauren Bramlett, with Kelly Barker, all added assists. All five goals in the win came in the first half, with Hensley's Cats outshooting ISU 15-8. Western Carolina led 3-1 in the first half against Morehead State before giving up two goals midway through the second half in a game that ended in a 3-3 tie after two overtimes. Barker, Morton, and Howell all scored for the Lady Cats. Late in the game the Lady Cats had a goal disallowed because of an offside call. That goal would have given WCU the win. "We've got a big part of our schedule coming up. UNCA, Clemson, and then into the bulk of our conference schedule." The Lady Bulldogs are next on Hensley and the Lady Cats agenda. Last season, the photo by Josh Doub Sophomore Megan Doherty battles against TSU. Lady Cats fell 3-0 to the mountain rival. "We really played poorly last year so hopefully we can even up the score and create a rivalry with them." Game time is 4:00 pm, Thursday, at Charles W. Schrader Field. Bailey Wins, Teams Place Second in Cat Classic by Melanie Cooper Staff Writer Both the men's and women's cross country teams took second to Furman University Saturday morning in the Catamount Classic held in Cullowhee. "Overall, we are very excited and proud of what we are doing now. We work hard to get better and the improvement shows that," said head cross country coach Danny Williamson. He added, "I think that we'll keep getting better every opportunity we have to compete because our young people will be more experienced with what we're doing." He added, "We couldn't be more happier with the team results, although we do want some individuals to step it up." The men's team edged out third place High Point by 12 Points. Fourth went to Brevard College, with conference member East Tennessee State plac- 'ng fifth. Oglethorpe University rounded out the six-team field. Leading the way for the photo by Mark Haskett Freshman Caleb Bailey (middle. 743) came from three back in the final 400 meters to take first in men's competition Catamounts along the 6-K course was freshman Caleb Bailey. With half a mile remaining in the race, Bailey was in fourth. However, from about 400 meters from the finish, Bailey sprinted his way into first place with a time of 19:05. He won by eight seconds over the second place finisher. Following Bailey for the men's team was sophomore Jesse Norman, who crossed the finish in fifth place with a time 19:35. Ben Watkins and Philip Ramsey took 15 and 17, while Cory McCall rounded out the top five for the Cats. "I think our three-four-five men ran closer to the one and two men," said Williamson. "But we still need to work on closing up that gap." Western Carolina's women's team also placed second behind Furman. Brevard College edged out East Tennessee State for third, with Oglethorpe and High Point rounding out team order. The Lady Catamounts were led by sophomores Melanie Cooper and Whitney Woods. Cooper completed the 5-K race in 19:40 to finish fifth, while Woods finished close behind in 19:48 and in ninth place. Sophomore Holly Bright came in third for the women's team with a twelfth place finish, followed closely by Megan Thacker and Denise Merritt. "We had different people in that three-four-five pack," said Williamson. "We closed the gap from what we had the race before." The Catamounts will travel to Charlotte on September 22 to compete in the Great American Cross Country Festival. They will also travel to Boone to compete on September 30 in the King/Queen of the Mountain. WCU's women are defending champions.
