  • 24 _WCnewsmagazine By Ryan Sarda + WCnewsmagazine The Catamounts ended Davidson's 19 game home winning streak by beating The Wildcats 77-70 in Belk Arena on Saturday February 4, 2006. Senior Corey Muirhead led the Catamounts in scoring and tied his career high with 23 points and seven rebounds. Muirhead was one of three Catamounts in double figures. Senior David Berghoefer recorded 17 points for Western, while sophomore Trey Hopkins scored his season high 15. Despite not scoring a field goal in the final 3:18 of the game, Western was able to hold on and seal the win by shooting 10-13 from the free-throw line down the stretch. Muirhead, who also scored 23 points his freshman year, shot 9-16 from the field and scored 10 of the team's final 21 points in the first haf. The Catamounts, who jumped out to an early 7-0 lead on two 3- pointers and a free-throw by Hopkins, never trailed throughout the game. After taking the early seven point advantage, Davidson was able to cut the deficit to three (19-16), which would be as close as the Wildcats would get in the game. The Catamounts took their largest lead of the game when sophomore Negus McKenna hit a jump-shot which made the score 26-15. Davidson (13-8, 6-3 SoCon) was able to cut the Catamount lead to four, after consecutive 3-pointers by Matt McKillop and Jason Morton. On the ensuing possession, senior Jared Outing found Hopkins on a back-door cut for an easy lay-up with 38 seconds remaining in the half. The Catamounts were able to close out the first half with a 37-31 advantage over Davidson. During the first 12 seconds of the second half, The Catamounts maintained their first half momentum as Berghoefer scored on a lay-up. Leading by six (46-40) with 1:10 leftto play in the game, Muirhead helped the Catamounts take its largest lead of the game after sinking two fre throws to make the score 67-55 with 2:46 left to play. The Catamounts had a 10 point lead with 53 seconds left, bul Davidson was able to sink two straight 3-pointers and cut the Catamouni lead to only four (72-68) with 40 seconds left to play. Two free-throws| by Berghoefer and one by Muithead pushed the Wester lead back to seven. Following the free-throws, Davidson's Jason Morton missed a 3 pointer, Berghoefer snagged the rebound and passed it off to Freshma Eric Wilson. Wilson was fouled immediately by Morton and Wilson made Catamounts Snap Davidsons Home Winning Streak both free-throws to seal the deal for the Catamounts, giving them a nine point advantage, 77-68 with 18 seconds remaining in the game. The win improves Western to 11-13 overall and gives them a 5-4 record in the Souther Conference. Davidson was led by Morton, who came off the bench with 22 points. Reigning SoCon Player of the Year, Brendan Winters contributed for the Wildcats with 16 points The Catamounts are off to their best league start in nine games since the 1995-96 season. The 1995-96 Catamount team started 6-3 and won the Southern Conference en route to an NCAA Tournament berth. Davidson's home winning streak was the third best home streak in the nation behind Gonzaga and ilinois. Gonzagas streak is the only one of the three that is stil in tact. Ilinois streak also came to an end when they lost on a controversial call to Penn State Western was able to shoot 50 percent from the field against the team that leads the SoCon in field goal percentage defense. The Catamount defense held the SoCons leading scoring offense to 70 points and just 38 percent shooting. The Catamounts stay on the road for their next game against Georgia Southem. The Cats will be looking to end another winning streak as the Eagles have won three in a row and have a 9-1 record at Hanner Field House this season. Georgia Southem is currently in first place in the South Division of the conference with a 6-3 record.
