  • 4 WCnewsmagazine Dear Editor, Western Carolina University officially held the grand opening of its Fine and Performing Arts Center on Saturday, October 22, 2005. It received substantial media coverage due to the magnitude of the main attraction, Jay Leno. He is a well-known comic/talk show host, most notably on The Tonight Show, on NBC television. am proud to be a non-traditional senior at WCU, which is to say that | am older than the average student. | will graduate in December with a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Communication, with a concentration on Electronic Media. My goal is to go into Radio Broadcasting, {1am in favor of promoting the growth of Western Carolina University, especially electronic technology, as well as the Arts. How far are we willing to go to accomplish this? | am not sure who made the decision to seek out Mr. Leno, but | do not agree with the decision to feature him as the premier act. Ifyou watch late night television, you may know what | am referring to. Most of the late-night talk shows are produced in New York, or Los Angeles, which are considered to be the hot spots in the entertainment industry. The Jay Leno Show is produced in Los Angeles, California. Many times | hear Leno, David Letterman, and Jimmy Kimmel making jokes out of our tragedies (Hurricanes in the South), as well as other hardships we face in the South; (unemployment, education) particularly the Appalachian region. Jokes are funny, making light of the difficulties a culture or region, are not! I think a better choice would have been to seek out someone who is from this region who has made substantial contribution to this region. When I refer to this region, | am referring to the Southern Appalachian Region, in which we live, The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBC!), of which | am a member, has made strides to become more involved in the development of WNC, and the surrounding region. The EBC! has made substantial contributions to WCU. The EBCI, through Harrah's Tribal Casino, helped pay to have Mr. Leno appear. If he really cared about this region, or the Center, he could have easily afforded to come here by his own resources. | receive funding from the Tribal Education and Training Program. The program has had to tighten its budget recently. Was that so we could have the honor of paying his way? | wonder how many scholarships, or Meagan, In your article Political Corruption in Western NC" | feel that you left out some valuable information. You mention Taylor's ERC program, but failed to acourately describe it. It is not merely colleges and universities getting together to utilize new technology. They also include national parks and reserves, and they give out Taylor's Grant money. However Taylor plans to use the money and divide up amongst new schools, ERC disperses the money, and not just for technology. | know because my mother is the Grants Manager for ERC. They give things like $15 million, not just for technology, but new dorm buildings and construction while also going toward internet, both ethernet and wireless, in these facilities as well. So you might have wanted to not only mention all of that, but also say that Taylor has had a significant impact on WCU's campus as well. | mean he pays for our dorms, our construction, and our internet. He does a lot more than you said... you only focused on the bad. Sarah LeClare added funds could have come out of his appearance expenses? | am speaking as an individual, as an American Citizen, which guarantees my right to Free Speech, according to the First Amendment of the Constitution of the United States of America. Jay Leno, because of his status, can say whatever he wants about an area in which he evidently doesn't know much about. He fies in, tells jokes (probably not about this region), then he is gone. Please understand that this is only an opinion, he can say what he wants to. | should be able to do the same. | do not have an immediate solution. | just fee! that this was not the right choice for the average person, such as someone like myself. | think we should have had someone who has made a meaningful contribution to this region, rather than someone who finds humor in our culture, just because itis different than his own. There are several celebrities from our region who could have easily filed the auditorium at $250.00 per guest. Ask yourself this question. Do you think Mr. Leno would have made an appearance at the Mountain Heritage Festival? For FREE? The folkways of the Appalachian region are often the butt of jokes made by entertainers, such as Leno, What is so funny about the economic and educational difficulties we face in the South, not to mention the entire nation? Mr. Leno was born in New Rochelle, New York, and grew up in Massachusetts? What does he have to offer, other than ignorance to a region that he knows litle about? If he did know about this region, he would know that we are not an individualistic culture. When someone needs help in this area, you can bet that your neighbors will be there to offer you whatever assistance they can. I know there are some who feel that this was a great step for the University, | feel like it was a sell-out to gain recognition. WCU has implemented the most advanced technology to train our students so that we might be able to compete with other universities around the country. Why should we compromise our values and beliefs for 1 hour of recognition? I hear a lot about how Western Carolina University is dedicated to serving the public. How many of you received invitations to attend this blackstie affair? Again, this is only an opinion, Sincerely, Mark L, Junaluska
