  • NOVEMBER 2. 1978/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/PAGE 7 sports WCU basketball Cottrell set for new season Steve Cottrell begins his second season as WCU basketball coach with optimisism and enthusiasm. Despite a 7-19 record his first WCU team won four Southern Conference games, finished out of the predicted cellar position and began making roundball a hot item in Cullowhee again. This season's task will be just as tough though, with the Cats taking on their toughest schedule in history and trying to replace Bubba Wilson. But the foundation for respectability is here. The Western coaches recruited well, gathering four highly regarded prep players—Greg Dennis, Eric Young, Kevin Young and Eric Taylor, along with the return of Raymond "Butch" Pearson to complement eight returning lettermen. Those are the leading returning scorer and rebounder, Terry Rutherford, Harry Dolan, Ricky Head, Clarence DesBordes, Larry Caldwell, Forrest Callaway, Doug Plemmons, and Jimmy McAllister. So far, in preseason practice Coach Cottrell has been pleased. "We have lots of enthusiasm in practice, and I've never seen a team pick things up quicker than this team. At this particular point we're better than last year—but we'll really be depending on freshmen and sophomores." The season should be fun. The Cats play a demanding Southern Conference schedule, plus games with Clemson, South Carolina and two bouts with new ACC member, Georgia Tech. One of those games is in Reid Gym. Immediately after Thanksgiving holiday the Cats have four home games in a row, leading off with Baptist College November 28. They beat WCU twice last year. The key for this season will be the students at WCU. Cottrell feels they are worth 10-15 points a game for the Cats in Reid Gym. Last season Reid was fill to capacity several times and that was unusual, especially is recent seasons. The student support was consistently strong. This season the goal is to fill Reid Gym with enthusiastic students every home game. Last year the seating was rearranged to benefit the students. Most of the highlights were in Reid Gym—who can forget stunning upsets of Marshall and ASU late in the season. This year the same seating will be in effect and Cottrell hopes to have music piped in early before the games, (those without preliminary matches), to get students out early and to have fun. The cheerleaders and pep bands will be back to help turn quaint old Reid Gym into a "Cat Pit" this winter. "We're building a team WCU students can be proud of—a team that will hustle and play hard. We've go to have maximum support of our students here, they are good fans. We can't do it alone...we want those seats full," Cottrell said, adding, "the students here are our number one priority." With the team talent and support of the Cats improving Cottrell feels the rebuilding of WCU basketball—decimated last year by the NCAA probation and other problems—is moving in the right direction. Yet he makes no promises of instant glory or a fancy won/lost record. The 78-79 Cats are young and facing a very rough schedule. "If ever there was a David and Goliath story it's here," Cottrell says, "but we're trying to build this •Turn to Page 13, Please Adult $2.50 Student $2.00 Child $1.00 College ID required for student ticket.
