4 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN December 3,1970 The Caf's Paw . .. .FROM Page 2 One day, Christinas Eve in fact, young Goodman StroUer asked toe old geezer, "May I please have tomorrow off. sir?" To which Screwge replied "HeU nol What for?" And the young boy told him about Christmas and his hardship case and gave toe old "Mother's sick, never - knew - my - daddy" routine, to which Screwge promptly replied, "See you at six in toe morning, as always," and stormed out of toe door as weU as a disheveUed old man could, into toe darkrmss. headhur for his. home. It was a quite cold and snowy evening so toe old codger stopped in toe local ale house for a spot of grog. Upon returning to his small apartment house, he thought he beheld toe face of an old poophead he had once written obscene epithets about He jumped beck—starting. "Oh nol lU.tt's my old schoolmaster...Jacob the Administrate!" he cried. He thought perhaps it was only the grog affecting the nerve endings in his retinas and let it pass at that, for he had seen many strange things before in a similar state. Once inside, he settled down for another warm evening of sleep with toe cold and snow Letters to the Editor bowling at his shutters. Lying on his back, he set toe little fuzzy ball of his sleeping cap on his right shoulder as he always did and feU promptly into a deep sleep. At length, be was awakened by something tugging at his nightgown. Opening nis eyes, he saw a form standing before him—holding a candle. At once he knew something wasnt straight and even more at once and almost at toe same time he knew toe story. The apparition, as he reasoned, was toe Spirit of Things Gone By—Things As Is and Things As They Going To Be, and toe hooded mass of ectoplasm so identified itself as thus. "lam..." "I know, I know," Screwge said, rather horsely, " and you're here to show me what a turd I was—am—and will be," "Yes and..." "None of your giddy ghoulishness, you idiot ectomorph," Screwge said. "But you made vourself an enemy of toe state by using filthy words, condemning dress codes, and blasting bigoted, racist, imperialists, and besides you have a lousy attitude...and" "And that's aU for tonight," old Scrooge said, showing the confused spirit to the door. "Humbug," Screwge muttered. "Somepeople do anything to commercialize Christmas." With that, the old fellow went back to toe security of his bed and dreamed of more ways to intimidate toe poor stable boy. Some people never give up, you bet, * * * • on," "Nonsense," "Who's she talking about?" Or did toe old paper fa U out of toe old hand onto toe old floor cause you're hungry and who wants to hear that same old crap? I wish I could shake you, slap you, reach out and touch you, convince you. It's not THEM—it's you, it's me, it's us. (There really is a purpose behind my emotion.) You see, for months I have listened. That's all-just listened to people. Right, here in North Carolina: home of "earth lovers," "BUly Graham lovers," "fresh air lovers," "liquor lovers," but mostly self-lovers with closed ears, closed minds and ever" opened mouths. How do we become so ingro- ssed in our own little worlds that we have no room—no room in toe inn—for the real world? Pm not asking that you jump with your Remington rifle and Early American BroyhUl into toe sUent majority. (Hey! That's a good one. Maybe you can use it in your next intellectual conversation.) AU I am asking is that you stop, look, and LISTEN just like mommy told you in toe first grade. Just for once, give your abused throat a rest If you are a self-lover—I mean even if you couldn't care less about anyone's troubles but your own—you have got to end the destructive chatter, brother. Give yourself a chance. Listen to all toe hand-me- down rappin' going down; you'll be surprised how nauseated it wUl make you. And the most sickening fact is that if you change a word here and there—There it is! your own .FROM Page 2 favorite slogan. If you care about any cause, any movement, any goal or any human being—even if it IS only yourself, keep on caring. But care enough to do something constructive. Realize that you are a part of this prejudiced, biased world. All man speak with forked tongue; and each flapping tongue adds to toe confusion. So listen. Get sick. Think. Mayloe even cry or pray. Then reach out and "try with a little help from your friends."
