  • Campus television changes; welcomes student involvem by Sara Halterman {| TV62 TV62, formally known as Channel 62, has been serving Western's campus since 1999. Farmerly being known for its use of power-point slides, TV62 recently evolved into much more than just a message board. Within the past year, TV62 has seen major growth and development as a student organization. Lamont Johnson, Station Manager, attributes the station's growth to students interested in seeing the station evolve into a real campus TV station. A group of students already working with TV62 decided that WCU needed an environment where students interested in electronic media could develop their skills and experience in television production, Johnson said. The students decided to give Channel 62 a face-lift, starting with a change in name (TV62) and logo. They organized the station into departments, including sales, promotions, sports, live and series programming and news. Since the stations initial turnover in the Fall of 2003, the organization has expanded its executive staff to include eight members and has recruited a large volunteer staff as well. Station programming has increased to include a continuing sketch comedy show called CATSCAN, campus news stories, commercials and sports highlights. The organization was also inducted into WCUs Student Media Board last Spring. Johnson says the growth has been excellent and he anticipates more growth in the future. Growth has been tremendous and TV62 has really come a long way, but we still have a lot of work to do. Sara Halterman working at TV62 It's important for Western to have a campus TV station that provides entertainment and information regarding activities at the university, says Sarah Kepley TV62 Programming Coordinator. It not only serves as a media outlet for WCU students, but it also allows interested students to work hands-on in their area of interest. Kepley also says working with TV62 helps students in the development of their professional careers. There are so many aspects of television production that it's sometimes difficult for a student to decide which area of television best suits their interests and capabilities. TV62 provides students with a chance to find that niche and can ultimately help students decide in what direction to take their career. TV62 is always looking for students to get involved with the station. Those interested in news writing, reporting, sports, camera operating, sales, promotions, editors, program development, are invited. You may even get the chance to create your own TV show! Johnson js optimistic about the future of the station and believes good things are in store for the new organization. We have a lot of plans to expand, says Johnson. We hope the students of WCU will support the growth of a campus television station. TV62 is in the process of constructing a news set to tape upcoming weekly news program. In addition, TV62 plans to showcase a student directed movie entitled TRUST this Fall. If interested in helping, or have a question or comment about TV62, contact the station at 227-3644 or email at CHANNEL62@wceu.edu. August 25, 2004
