  • WCU mens golf team accomplishes history by Winning Draper Valley Invitational by Andy Gambill WCnewsmagazine The WCU Mens Golf team rewrote the record books on April 5 by winning Appalachian States Draper Valley Invitational. The win represented the first regulation victory in an event not hosted by WCU. The Catamounts shot three-under par in the final round to finish with a two-day total of 582. The 582 by the Catamounts was the fourth-lowest 36- hole team score in WCU history. The three-under par score of 285 on the final day was the second- lowest 18-hole team score in Catamount history. The win was the fifth tournament title in Catamount history. Three of the four other wins were in the 1994 WCU-Maggie Valley Invitational, 2001 WCU- Laurel Ridge Intercollegiate and 2004 WCU-Shoot Out at Wild Wing. The fourth victory was in 1996 at day, so the Cats stayed at the with a team score of 9 time among three-round team history. pe The Lady Cats tied with G eorget Ashley Hovda named 2" WCU Women finish 4" in by Andy Gambill WCnewsmagazine Led by Junior Ashley Hovda, the Lady Catamounts fought the elements and came away with a fourth place finish at the SoCon Golf Conference Championships. Hovda shot a 73 on the final day to finish second overall and win 2"-team All-SoCon Honors. Hovda's three-day total of 223 paced the Lady Cats to a team-total of 941. The excellent day three performance of Hovda pushed the Cats from fifth to fourth on the final day. With a 306 on Sunday, the Cats shot the best round of any team on the day. The 941 by the Lady Cats Was the 4'"-best showing in their SoCon tournament history and the 11"-best round in all-time school history, Hovda, a two-time 2"-team All-SoCon performer, 9th place. WCU beat out Boston College, rival Appalachian State, Columbia, Rutgers and Old Dominion in the the VMI Invitational, but that tournament lasted only one round due to rain. Leading the way for the Cats was Sophomore Tripp Morrow. Morrow finished the tournament with a final score of 142. After shooting rounds of 73 and 69, Morrow lost in a playoff and finished 2nd overall. Morrows two-day score was good enough for 6th- all time in the WCU record books. Also finishing in the top 10 for the Cats were Matt Cook and Blake Wray. Cook finished 5th overall with a score of 144 after shooting rounds of 74 and 70. Wray rounded out the top ten by finishing 9th with a score of 147 after shooting rounds of 75 and 72. The final two performers for the Catamounts were Matt Dowdy and Chase Kress. Dowdy finished 19th Satamounts were . Andersen finished 1 a total score of 237. She shooting 80, 79 and then 78 on of the tournament. Also giving strong performances for the Lady Cats were Junior Ashley Hovda and Sophomore Bianca Melone. Hovda and Melone each finished tied for 41st with a total of 239 each. Hovda had shot rounds of 83, 77 and 79, while Melone shot 83, 80 and 76. The 76 by -Melone on the last day of the tournament was the team low. Freshmen Lucinda Davies and Kandy Carland Team All-SoCon as 23 WCnewsmagazine overall with a score of 150, and Kress finished 38th overall with a score of 157. Dowdy shot rounds of 76 and 74, while Kress fired rounds of 75 and 82. Keith Tyburski competed individually and finished 7th overall in the tournament with a score of 146. WCU finished the tournament seven strokes ahead of second-place Charleston Southern. The Cats had the best score of the first day with 297. Their second-day total of 285 was second only to Charleston Southerns 284. Morrow's loss in the playoff was to Radfords Josh Meador. After shooting 72 on the first day, Meador finished with 70 on the second day to win the Invitational. Western will finish the season on April 15-17 at Davidson for the SoCon Championships. pover Invitational rounded out the Lady Cats team with scores of 243 | and 248. Davies finished tied for 54th overall after | shooting totals of 83, 79 and 81. Carland finished tied for 66th overall after shooting totals of 81, 86 and 81. The Princeton Tigers were the team winners of the event with a combined score of 900. Avery | Kiser led the Tigers with a score of 218 to tie forthe | individual crown with Garrett Phillips of third-place _ Augusta State. 7 The Bonnie Hoover Invitational represented the _ final tournament prior to the SoCon Championships for the Lady Cats. The SoCon tournament will be held at Furman University from April 22 through 24. Golf Conference championships was tied for 15" after a first day score of 79 but quickly moved to 2 place on the second day by firing a 71. Hovdas 223 was only 3 strokes behind first-place finisher Jenny Suh of Furman. Hovdas 223 was the second-best SoCon performance in WCU history and her 2 place finish was the second-best finish in school history. Hovda outplayed Suh the final two days of the tournament but Suh shot an amazing 68 on the first day that gave her an incredible cushion for error. Suh finished as Golfer of the Year in the SoCon as well as winning the individual championship on Sunday. Sophomore Bianca Melone led the charge for the rest of the Lady Catamounts by finishing 10" overall. Melone fired rounds of 81, 77 and 75 to finish with a total of 233. Junior Brandy Andersen finished tied for 16" overall with a score of 239, while freshman Kandy Carland rounded out the Cats with a score of 251 to finish tied for 29" overall. Furman dominated the tournament from start to finish to win their 11" conference championship the history of the 12-year tournament. With a tee score of 904, Furman finished 33 strokes ahead second-place Elon. East Tennessee State edged ti Cats by one stroke for third-place.
