  • 8 WCnewsmagazine New Clubs at Western by Brandy Kiger Are you bored? Looking for something to get involved in? Well, you dont have to look very far, with over a 100 clubs and organizations on campus. The clubs cover a wide variety of academic subjects, interests, and athletics. After going defunct nearly two years ago, the English club is back in business and going strong. Dr. Newt Smith is the faculty advisor for the club and he has been working hard to reorganize it. The purpose of the club is to provid@a place for people who like to read and write to get together and have fun and explore new ideas. The hope of the English club is that they will be able to provide a network for students to get together and share their ideas. To facilitate this, each week they will be holding programs at the meetings. On Wednesday, October 5", Dr. Smith presented on Jack Tales. These tales are derivatives of the Jack and the Beanstalk narratives, and are some of the literature that is very popular in the Appalachia region. More than just fairytales, they are a political statement, Dr. Smith explains, They originated in Scotland and England, and told the story of the poor downtrodden overcoming their oppressors. This is just one of the events the club has planned. The club also plans to sponsor a poetry slam, a contest for short stories, and several reading groups over the course of the year. The next meeting, October 20!" (the week after fall break) there will be a workshop on how to get ajob as an English major. The only requirement to be in the English club is that you have to like to read. The club meets Wednesdays at 5:00 pm in Coulter 304. For more information, contact Dr. Newt Smith at x3966. On the sports side of the issue, there is a new Wrestling club on campus, organized by freshman Brodie Lowe. After my last match in high school, | didnt like the fact that | couldn't wrestle again, so since | got here | was determined to start the wrestling club, and God just paved the way. Wrestling is a huge part of my life. Brodie has been really surprised at the turnout. You have to have six people to start a club, and the first meeting there were twenty-three signed up. Right now, the club is only open to guys, and there is no experience necessary. The style of wrestling they will practice is Scholastic wrestling, which is the way high school and college teams most often wrestle. The club is not an official club sport yet, but Brodie hopes the team will be a varsity team within the next two years. There are plans to wrestle against Clemsons club team in the near future, as well as other schools. The club meets on Tuesday nights at 9:15 in Reid Gym.
