  • Page 14 /THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/March 20, 1980 WCU hosts one hundred history students Competition will be held in two divisions, a junior division for grades 6-8 and a senior division for grades 9-12. There will be five categories of competition- historical papers, individual projects, group projects, individual performances and group performances. Groups must be limited to five students and papers entered must be the work of one student. History Day activities will begin at the WCU Mountain Heritage Center Friday, March 28, from 4 until 7 p.m. during a special period for project set-up and performance preparation. Following registration Saturday morning and a welcome by Dr. John McCrone, dean of the WCU School of Arts and Sciences, student presentations will begin. There will be eight 20-minute presentation periods in Founders Auditorium in the Mountain Heritage Center. Other events scheduled during the morning will include campus tours, round table discussions, a DODODDDDDDDDDDDOaDDDDaODOQaDDDDDDDaOODDDDaDDaDDDDDDDDDaODDDDDQ D a The subject will be historv March 29 when an expected 100 high school and junior high students meet at WCU for the 8th Educational District's History Day. The district History Day is one of eight to be held in a statewide program to encourage young people to explore a historical subject related to them. District medalists in the History Day competition advance to the state contest on North Carolina History Day April 26 at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and the top winners from all participating states advance to Washington, D.C, May 29-31 for National History Day. "The Individual in History" is the theme for the 1980 History Day contest series. Division of Archives and History. The luncheon and awards ceremony will be held in Dodson Cafeteria from 12:30 until 2:30 p.m. Judges for the district competition are Conway; T. Conn Bryan of the WNC Historical Society; Sheldon Neuringer of Warren Wilson College; Philip Walker, Bruce Greenawalt and Milton Ready of UNC-Asheville; Ronald Eller and James Lenburg of Mars Hill College; and John Bell, Tyler Blethen, Constance Head, Ellerd Hulbert, Jim Lewis, Alice Mathews, Owen, Gerr . Schwartz, Brian Walton, Max Williams and Curtis Wood. Dr. Gordon McKinney, WCU associate professor of history, is serving as chairman of the district History Day. Funding is provided by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Early entries in the competition include schools from Buncombe, Clay, Graham, Haywood, Henderson and Jackson.
