The definition of overall wellness includes much more than physical fitness concerns. It includes mental, emotional, and social aspects as well. For some people it is easy to go to the gym and sweat off a few calories, but it is harder to acknowledge how to deal with mental and emotional problems. For various reasons, people tend to neglect their social, mental, and emotional problems, and as a result, overall wellness vanishes. Here at Western, Counseling and Psychological Services offers free help to students. CPS strives to enhance the psychological growth, emotional wellbeing, and learning potential of all students. All information gathered by CPS is considered confidential and does not go in students educational records. Therefore, no one, not even faculty at Western, can access records held by CPS. Different services are offered by CPS, each of which is specialized to meet specific requests that students may have. Individual counseling is offered to the student body at no charge, and each session lasts approximately 45 minutes. In the case of a psychological emergency, counselors are made available 24 hours a day during the fall and spring semesters. CPS is also responsible for helping istudents when they need to withdraw from a class for mental or emotional scircumstances, Students can receive medication evaluations through CPS fas well, if they truly and genuinely need medication for emotional and mental isorders. The staff at CPS communicates on a regular basis with student organizations nd groups, faculty and staff and individual departments of the university _about problems that exist within students learning atmosphere. CPS also conducts presentations and facilitates workshops on a variety of issues such s stress management, dreams, gender issues and codependency. The staff akes referrals on a need-be basis and can include recommendations to urther consultation, community groups, pastoral counseling or, in extreme ircumstances, hospitalization. WCnewsmagazine ommonly known as FEMA, has been part of the Group counseling is offered by CPS, and six groups are currently available for students to participate. The topics of discussion in these groups include relationships, womens issues, sexual and gender identity, meditation, relaxation and substance abuse control. For some of these groups, a pre-attendance interview is necessary in order to be sure your needs will be met by attending. Not all groups are the same in content or character; some focus on thoughts and behaviors, while others focus on interaction. To make an appointment for individual counseling, group counseling or any other type of service CPS offers, students are welcome to stop by the counseling center located in the Bird Building on the second floor. Students can also call CPS at 227-7469. Below is a list of the current Counseling Center groups open for new Ivan by Jennifer Wikey urricanes calling during non-peak times, which are currently may still be eligible for assistance. According to their website, FEMA's mission is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for ali hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. In other words, FEMA is a federal program that provides financial assistance to victims of natural disasters, national emergencies, etc. FEMA is playing a prominent role in the recovery of many southeastern states as the 2004 Atlantic Hurricane Season has been one of the most destructive in history. The season isnt even over yet, and already 12 storms have resulted in 21 federal disaster declarations covering 13 states and Puerto Rico. To date, nearly $6 million has been given in aid to victims of Hurricane Ivan in North Carolina alone. Following Tropical Storm Frances and Hurricane Ivan, state and federal officials announced the opening of a temporary Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) in Jackson County fo assist people in the community who suffered damages from those storms. The DRC was located ai the Jackson County Justice Center on Grindste Cove Road in Sylva from September 21 to 25. Tnat DRC and most of the others in Western North Caro!ina are closed now. But there is still help available for people in WNC. Residents of disaster-deciared countieslike Jackson, Haywood, Macon, Swain and Buncombe whose homes, businesses or personal property were need it can begin the process of applying for disaster assistance by calling FEMA's toll-free teleregistration line, listed below. FEMA advises that those who have immediate needs for food, clothing, cleaning supplies, minor medical care, etc., contact the American Red Cross or another voluntary agency for assistance. FEMA provides disaster assistance to cover basic needs only; it will not compensate for entire losses. The government may help pay for basic needs not covered under insurance policies, so even people who were insured may be eligible for financial assistance. By law, FEMA is not allowed to duplicate insurance benefits and it does not allow payment of insurance deductibles: however, if a victim's insurance company does not cover all the costs or damage, FEMA may be able to help. Those who have insurance coverage should contact their agents and file a claim immediately. Wait until you know what your settlement will be, then if you need additional neip, call FEMA. 7 FEMA officials encourage people affected by Topical Storm Frances and Hurricane Ivan to apply or disaster assistance by Calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). Registrars are taking applications 24 hours a day until further notice. Note that the toll-free teleregistration line has been receiving a record number of calls, and it may be difficult to get through to them.
