  • jpn (o2) Catamount Football foils Colonels "~U - Ryan Fussell | Wnewsmagazine r The first Saturday football game of the year for Western was marked by the smell of tailgater cooking, RVs filling the parking lots around E. J. Whitmire stadium, and alumni looking for another win from the Cats. Well, the football team was not one to disappoint in an impressive showing against the number 28 Nicholls State Colonels. Nicholls state had been marred earlier this year by the firing of the head coach and an assistant coach for academic fraud. The university had 15 players that were academically ineligible, is several of which were members of the Colonel's football team. 8 Western had no mercy for the Colonels Saturday as they g proceeded to rout Nicholls State 28-7. The energy from the student section broke from > kickoff, and grew with every big hit. It took until late in the a first quarter to see any points go on the scoreboard, but the = first points were placed when the Catamounts Nick Wishart f broke a 30-yard run to the left side of the line. Wishart seemed determined as he broke several tackles and shove off another to cruise into the end zone. The next score would also come in favor of Western after a Francis Brown interception left the Cats in scoring position inside the Colonels end of the field. After a 15-yard by Lamont Reid and an 11-yard Xavier Goddard run, Wishart found the end zone again, barreling the Cats to a 14-0 half- time lead. 8 Half time adjustments made, the Cats came out | and exchanged possessions with the Colonels several times. | The Colonels looked to have something going with a drive it Ricky Rainey(29), Lamar Barnes(44), and Darvin Coffin(46) bring down oct sap hag State in Saturdays WCU victory at EJ Whitmire down to the Cats own 9 yard line, but a couple of key plays led Nicholls State to elect going for the conversion on fourth down. Pressing the QB, Darvin Coffin forced a pitch to the running back directly into a hit heard around the stadium courtesy of O.J. 5 Owens. This ignited the Catamount student section, but would not be capitalized on. 3 Western was forced to punt, and several plays later, Nicholls had an end around 5 reverse to the strong side of the field that led to an unscathed touchdown for the ball g carrier. Nicholls would make the extra point and bring the game to 28-7. Fora moment Fy it looked as though Nicholls may be beginning to mount some sort of attack. a) e Desperate to put more points on the scoreboard, on fourth down, @. son faked a field goal attempt, only to have the holder chased down by a sea of 8 atamount special teams members led initially by Mitchell Dukes, and unsettlingly fumbling into the hands of Andre Brown. Western would drive down field with a 54 yard pass by Bennett Swygert to Michael Reeder, but a missed field goal attempt left the Colonels deep in their own territory. Shortly after, Dukes would force another fumble that would give the Cats superb field position. A pair of runs later, Wishart would reach the end zone for the third time on a weak side end around. A\little more than a minute later, Cory Ellison came up with a huge hit on the Nicholls quarterback that would be as close to the nail in the coffin as one could feel. Sophomore QB, Russell Hemby. would take the position the remainder of the game and had an impressive run on a >. quarterback-keeper that involved several redirects, a duck-under, and a few jukes to Nicholas Wishart scored three touchdowns in Western ahs ne Nicholls defense look bad trying to get a hold of him.
