  • College Democrats send an invitation by Jason Nabes | WCnewsmagazine November 2, 2004, will be a very important day for everyone who lives in the USA. On that critical Tuesday we as citizens will exercise our right to select the next president of our country. This will be the closest election in this nations illustrious history. Do you know who best represents you? Do you even care who gets elected? Are you confused by the republican xenophobic propaganda you hear daily about compassionate conservatism? The College Democrats of Western Carolina University welcome anyone regardiess whether or not you know the answer to any of those questions. Meetings are held every Wednesday at 5:30 in the Catamount Room on the second floor of the UC. Our organization is in its third year, after a period of inactivity, and we have already gained over 40 steady members who are ready for action. There have only been two meetings held this semester, so if you haven't attended a meeting, you can still join while the semester is just starting. The meetings are relaxed, with a group of like-minded people discussing issues that pertain to everyone at this university. We are planning on going toe-to-toe with the College Republicans once again this semester in a heated debate that you, too, can be a part of. We are also planning an eventful trip to Washington, D.C., and will have many voter registration drives, as well as many opportunities to spread the message of equality and opportunity, while having fun on campus. Ifyou would like to execute your rights as a citizen of our great nation or become more informed about decisions that affect you, then College Democrats is the place to go. If you are tired of the fear-based politics of the Bush/Cheney White House and want to stand up for your rights, as well as the rights of every citizen, then come join us. and bring a friend. Stop the madness. Vote democrat in November. The People Speak SAGLA enables students to become involved in politics by Jennifer Slagle | WCnewsmagazine If you're interested in politics or saw a political debate on campus last year, then you have heard a new acronym: SAGLA. It sounds like some kind of bagel. but in fact, it is the newest student organization at WCU. The Student Association of Government and Legal Affairs (SAGLA) is a non-partisan, politically oriented organization that promotes student interest in the workings of various government and legal systems. After a lull in activity for the past four or five years, SAGLA has been re-introduced as of the 2003-2004 year with great success. So far, SAGLA members have organized and hosted a number of events in their first year back. Perhaps the | | most memorable were the two debates (hosted each semester) between the College Democrats and College Republicans. Last March, members helped bring the North Carolina Political Science Association's annual! meeting to WCU. In addition, SAGLA and the Political Science Department sponsored Congress to Campus, bringing two retired congressmen, Lloyd Meeds (D-Washington) and William H. Zeliff, Jr. (R-New Hampshire) to WCU to in politics. SAGLA members were able to meet and speak with participants at both of these monumental events. The organization has projects planned at all times, and this year they already have a registration drive scheduled for Sept. 21-22 in the University Center and Sept. 28-29 in Hunter Library. This is very important because voter registration cards must be turned in by Oct. 8 in order to vote in the general election. Voting is not only a right but a responsibility for all citizens. Let SAGLA help you become registered and show you how to become involved in the political process. SAGLA provides a great opportunity for students to take part in exciting political-based events and social gatherings. They meet Wednesdays at 4 p.m. in the Dogwood Room on the second floor of the UC. All are welcome! | talk to students about the importance of being involved | Learn more about WCUs Coliege Republicans by Jennifer Oakley | WCnewsmagazine Western Carolina Universitys chapter of College Republicans is the best in the state. That's right; we won the coveted Club of the Year" award last semester at the Spring Convention in Charlotte, NC. The award is given to the most active club each year. Activity level is generally measured by how many people from each club attend events. We, being one of the smaller schools in the North Carolina Federation of College Republicans (NCFCR), have sent more people to Voter Registration Drive in the past year than any other club in the state. But that's not all we do. We are involved in many events on campus, such as doing tables in the University Center or hotly debating against the College Democrats. In addition, we attend two statewide conventions each year (one each academic semester) and the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), a national conference held annually in Washington, D.C. You may see us at football games handing out political paraphernalia or in the first floor lobby of the University Center registering people to vote. Whatever we're doing, we always promote voter and political awareness on campus. Id like to encourage everyone to come out to one of our events, the most popular ones being the debates For further information, please visit the club's website (http:/Avww.ncfcr.org) or come out to a meeting on the second floor of the UC at 7 p.m. on Tuesdays. Remember, the people who are elected officials now will affect our future! Im sure all my colleagues in the club would encourage all students to be politically aware and to register to vote for this years election. Thanks, and remember to GET INVOLVED! A nation-wide discussion on American Foreign Policy September 20 from 7 p.m.- 9p.m. . Hospitality Room of the Ramsey Center joe POLITICS
