  • _ WiC. ewsmagazine 15 WCU sophomore Stephanie Svoboda scored what would become the Catamounts game winning goal in their 1-0 victory over Gardner-Webb Friday afternoon at Schrader Field in what was the season opener for both teams. The Catamounts came out strong in the first half after a storm delay that pushed the starting time back one hour. Svoboda led the Cats on offense with four shots and an unassisted goal for her first of the season. Svobodas goal came with 26:01 left in the first half as she launched an indirect kick past the Bulldog defense into the upper left corner of the net. Western led the game in shots with eight, while the Catamount defense allowed only four shots from the Bulldogs. Four other Catamounts: junior Natalie Turgeon, freshman Heather Dittmer, junior Natasha Moore, and freshman Lauren Atkinson, helped Svoboda add to WCUs shot total with one shot a piece. lam proud of our ability to pull out the win, Head Coach Debbie Hensley said. However, the game did not live up to my expectations. We have a lot to work on. The Lady Cats travel to play Coastal Carolina on Tuesday, August 31, 2004 with match time scheduled to start at 4:00 pm. Western then returns home to host UNC Asheville next Friday, September 3, 2004 with match time scheduled to start at 4:00 pm at Schrader Field. SPORTS Interested in Sports Writing? wc@wcu.edu
