  • Weapons of Mass Destruction Training Held at WCU by Jennifer Wilkey | WGnewsmagazine On August 17th, campus public safety officials from four states attended a one-day training session entitled Campus Public Safety Response to Weapons of Mass Destruction Incidents held at WCU. Twenty-seven participants, including campus police officers, administrators and even human resource personnel, represented regional state, private and religious schools. "We were aiming for a wide range of occupations, says Lt. Bob Scott of Western's police department. | was very pleased with the turnout, considering it was the first time we had offered it. Scott co-instructed the class along with Sgt. Shannon Tiffin of Duke University. This course is designed for law enforcement personnel, public safety officials, and university staff and faculty members who would be involved in an incident involving weapons of mass destruction or other campus emergencies. This is the first training of its kind to be held in Western North Carolina. This event is jointly sponsored by the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators and Louisiana State University, says Scott. The |ACLEA received grant money from the federal Department of Homeland Security, Office of Domestic Preparedness, which has set aside two million dollars to train 30,000 first responders over the next two years. The course curriculum was developed by the LSU-based National Center for Biomedical Research and Training, Academy of Counter-Terrorist Education. The program is being administered at schools across the country. This is only the awareness level of something like this. It's the very basics. One of the modules we teach is personal safety in an event, Scott explains. In other words, one of the most important things participants learn is how to take care of themselves so that they can better help others during an emergency. This course is not designed for the people that are already well versed in hazardous materials and things like that. This course is more for the first responders, the people that are there initially. There are other courses that go into greater depth of how to actually handle an incident, says Scott. Scott says this training session is something that he would like WCU to hold annually. What we wanted to do was bring it to our campus so that we could reach as many peopie in Western North Carolina, northwest South Carolina, and northeast Georgia as possible, says Scott. We're also probably going to conduct a full scale drill, he adds. The Campus Public Safety Response to Weapons of Mass Destruction Incidents course is just one of many efforts WCU has been making recently to increase security and emergency preparedness on campus. Last fall, Western began offering the first bachelor's degree program in emergency management in North Carolina, a response to the need for increasingly sophisticated training for emergency and disaster responders. In May, campus police and EMS, along with local fire departments, police and emergency personnel, participated in a disaster drill with a mock chemical explosion and victims. Most recently, the Health Center conducted a bomb threat response drill on August 18th to help Health Services personnel learn how to respond in emergency situations.
