  • $LuUOdS Annual Meet the Cats Event Marks Final WCU Football Scrimmage Nicholas Wishart Provides Highlight With 52-Yard, Touchdown Run On Tuesday August 24 at Whitmire Stadium/Waters Field, the Western Carolina football team held its third and final scrimmage of the 2004 preseason, hosting the annual Meet the Cats scrimmage. A good crowd came out for the short, 49-play scrimmage, which was highlighted by a 52-yard Nicholas Wishart touchdown run. Wishart finished with four carries for 64 yards, while fellow tailback Lamont Reid had another solid outing with his 36 yards on seven attempts. The second offense got things started and moved the ball well early, | only to have the series end with a punt. The first offense then took over. | Wishart accounted for all but seven yards of the 70-yard scoring drive with a four-yard run, a seven-yard run and the 52-yard touchdown off left tackle. On the scoring play, the offensive line gave an initial good push, Wishart broke a couple of tackles and raced to the endzone. | Bennett Swygert completed a seven-yard pass to Michael Reeder for the only other yards during the drive. The offense looked to keep the momentum, getting a good start to the next series. However a Darvin Coffin sack on third down forced a punt. Reid then took over at tailback and made some nice runs. However two costly penalties would keep the offense from gaining a first down. Reid and the first offense stayed on the field for a new set of downs, but the series came to an end as Western moved on to another situation. The new situation had the offense starting on its own one yard line. Both series would end in punts. However, sophomore Tim Mayse pr oved be to a good weapon as he had two impressive punts out of his own endzone, including a 55-yarder. Mayse would end the scrimmage averaging 45.0 yards on six punts. The Cats then worked on their two-minute drill. The defense forced a three and out, then, sophomore Ryan Nesby made a nice play, intercepting a Swygert pass. The scrimmage came to a close with work in the red zone. Both series ended in each kicker attempting two field goals each. Shon Rowser, who converted the lone extra point of the night, missed from 34 yards out before connecting from 33 yards out. Mayse was good from both 34 and 33 yards. Of the 49 plays during the scrimmage, only 12 were passing plays. Swygert completed three of his first four and ended by completing 5-of-10 for 21 yards with an interception. Russell Hemby and Justin Clark were both 0-for-1. Coffin led the defense with two tackles for losses and a sack, while freshman Darren Curtis had a fumble recovery and a pass break up. We did not want to scrimmage too long with our first game only nine days away (Sept. 2 versus West Virginia State), said WCU head coach Kent Briggs. We have a lot of run for improvement. We came out in game uniforms and tired to simulate a game-like atmosphere. Our freshmen and newcomers looked nervous and needed to have this experience tonight to get ready for our first game. We will evaluate the film and correct our mistakes.
