  • PAGE 6/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/FEBRUARY 22, 1979 sports Cats drop fwo toughies By STEVE SURLES Sports Editor Western Carolina closed out the regular season with two tough losses over the past week, falling short with comebacks in both games. Saturday night in Reid Gym, before a crowd of 4,000, the Cats closed out regular season play at home with a 70-69 heartbreaking loss to The Citadel. The game went down to the last shot of the game at The Citadel's Dale French missed the front end of a one and one with eight seconds to play with WCU's Terry Rutherford grabbing the rebound. Kevin Young took the outlet pass, brought the ball quickly up the court, and took a long jumper that bounced off the rim. The Cats were unable to control the rebound as the final seconds ticked off the clock. from the line, WCU only 9-22. It was a contest all the way through, as the Gamecocks lead 40-34 at the half, largely on the benefit of five unanswered points in the last minute of the half. USC came out smoking in the second half. Then the the second half, with the lead changing hands five times, with the Cats last lead coming on Greg Dennis' 25 footer with seven minutes to play, 51-50. The Cats were led by another fine game from Ray Person as he tallied 19 points. Eric Taylor added 19 also and grabbed 10 rebounds. Greg Dennis hit for 12 points. Rick Swing led The Citadel with 20 points on 9 of 12 from the floor. Tom Slawson added 19 points, 17 of those in the second half, with Randy Nesbit canning 12 points. The loss left WCU with a 5-7 SC mark. With Furman'l 71-61 defeat of Marshall in Greenville Saturday night the Cats could have sewn up a home-court first round game with a win. As it turned out The Citadel beat the Thundering Herd Monday Cats rallied, with Ray Person and Larry Caldwell leading the charge, cutting the Gamecock lead to just one 55-54, with 10:05 left. The game stayed close, from one to three points, for the next couple of minutes. Then Zam Frederick, who The Cats had come from five points down in just 26 seconds for a chance at the victory. Trailing 70-65, Eric Taylor tapped in a missed shot and the Cats called a timeout. The Citadel was unable to get the ball inbounds and a five second violation was called turning the ball back over to the Cats. Forrest Callaway then banked a shot in with just 13 seconds left to cut the margin to one. Early in the game it seemed that The Citadel would repeat their performance earlier in the season in Charleston as they beat the Cats 78-54. They hit eight of their first ten shots to take a 16-2 lead in the first 6:30 minutes of the game. Jim Graziano came off the bench to ignite the Gamecock nieht 75-69 to give the Cats the coveted home-court game. The Cats closed out the 78-79 regular season Monday against the University of South Carolina Gamecocks in Columbia, S.C. The Cats came up short 87-75 on the scoreboard, but gave one of their toughest efforts of the year in trying to subdue Frank McGuire's USC team. In the end, foul shooting was the difference, with USC hitting 27-39 at the half 27-27 on Ray Person's corner jumper with only two seconds left. Person led all scores with 26 points, in one of his finest games of the year. Eric Taylor battled for 14 points and 14 rebounds with Kevin Young adding 10 points. USC was led by the Frederick with 23 points, with Cedric Hordges hitting 19 and pulling down 17 rebounds. Mike Doyle added 18 for the Gamecocks who upped their record to 15-8 with the win.
