  • WCUs Yoneko Allen Named Academic All-America Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina womens basketball senior Yoneko Allen has been selected to the Academic All-America third team it was announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) after gracing the All-District Ill team for three straight years. She becomes the second WCU womens basketball player to receive the honor as Lori Lyons was selected to the list in 1992. Allen joins Catamount football graduate Jason Whaley, who was named to the prestigious team earlier this year. In order to be eligible for Academic All-America honors, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale), must be a starter or an important reserve and be in at least their second season of athletic and academic eligibility at their current school. Candidates are selected based on their academic and athletic achieve- ments as well as their community involvement. Yoneko is a very dedicated student, head coach Beth Dunkenberger praised. Its nice to see her efforts in the classroom recognized in addition to what she has accomplished on the court. Allen, a Gray Court, S.C., native, currently holds a 3.98 GPA as a triple major in Sport Management, Marketing and Business Administration & Law and has been named to the Deans List the past seven consecutive semesters. For her academic efforts, Allen has twice been named WCUs Scholar Athlete of the Year, a two-time Arthur Ashe, Jr., Scholar Athlete, a two- time TIAA-CREF Academic All-SoCon member, a TIAA-CREF Student-Athlete of the Week in 2003 and has made the SoCon and WCU Honor Rolls each year. The 5-8 guard just recently wrapped up her Catamount career at Western with a trip to the Southern Conference championship game in Charleston, S.C. It was the first time in the programs history that WCU had won more than one tournament game and the first time the Cats had made it to the championship game. Allen started all but one contest in her three years on the squad after transferring from Clemson University. She has certainly made her mark on WCU womens basketball history as she owns five single-season and career records, includ- ing career 3-point field goals made (180) and 3-point field goals attempted (542). The three- year captain also appears on Westerns career and single-season lists nine other times. Allen led the team and finished atop the Southern Conference in 3-pointers per game at 2.17. She also finished 12th in 3-point field goal percentage (.322) and 20th in overall scoring at 9.8 points per contest. Allen led the Cats in scoring in four games this season. A leader in the local community as well as in her hometown in South Carolina, Allen has been the co-director and coordinator for the Laurens Amateur Association in Laurens, S.C., as well as assisted in planning community service projects for her church back home. She also began a clothing ministry at her church to provide clothes for the needy. In the local area, Allen has been involved in several service projects with her teammates and her sorority such as trash pickup, clothing drives, canned food drives, serving food at the local Community Table, raising money for cancer research, promoting breast cancer awareness and tutoring/mentoring UPDATE Mens Golf Mens Golf Moves Up to Finish 13th at Winthrop- Waterford Invitational Tripp Morrow and Tim Eckberg Each Shoot 152 Rock Hill, S.C. - Tim Eckberg improved by 10 strokes, firing a one-under 71, as Western Carolina moved up two spots to finish 13th at the annual Winthrop-Waterford Invitational at Waterford Country Club with a two-round score of 625. Eckberg (81-71) and freshman Tripp Morrow. (74-78) each carded a two-round total of 152 to tie for 23rd. Blake Wray improved by six strokes on day two for a two-day total of 158 (82-76) to finish 51st. Matt Flueckiger and Alex Arrigo fired identical rounds of 85-78 for a total of 163 and finished 68th (tied). SoCon foe UNC Greensboro (594) held off Chattanooga (595) by one stroke to win the annual event. Individually, Campbells Ulf Hedlund took medalist honors with a six-under 138 (71-67). Womens Tennis Womens Tennis Falls 5-2 to Belmont in Hilton Head Rocio Perez Defeated Shivani in 2nd Spot Hilton Head, S.C. - The Western Carolina womens tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to Belmont in the teams first match in Hilton Head, S.C. Rocio Perez and Erin Johnson picked up the 8-6 win to open doubles play, but the Bruins came back to take the number two and three doubles matches to claim the first point of the match. local grade school students. Catcher Andy Hawranick started the home half by being hit by a pitch and scored on a two-out double by Wes Hodges. Georgia Tech trimmed its deficit to one (3-2) in the bottom of the fifth. Jake Hall had a two-out single and scored, thanks to.an Eric Patterson double and a fielding error by WCU on the play. In the bottom of the sixth, Barnes, who got his first start since his freshman season, left the game with two runners on and one out in the sixth. The Fredericksburg, Va., native pitched a career-high 5.1 innings, one inning longer than his previous best. Luke Miller came in an induced an inning-ending double play to end the Georgia Tech threat. Barnes allowed four hits, two runs (one earned) and a walk with three strikeouts. Georgia Tech took its first lead in the game with two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Tyler Greene started the Tech seventh with an infield single. He stole second, moved to third on a ground out and scored on a single to center by pinch hitter Whit Robbins. With two outs, Robbins, who stole second, scored the game- winning run on a single by Hodges. Miller (0-1) was saddled with the loss, allowing two hits and two runs in an innings work. Mike McGowan faced one batter in the seventh, striking out Patterson, and Brian McCullen pitched the final 1.1 innings allowing one hit, no runs and a walk with two strikeouts. Western only managed one hit over the final six innings. The Cats got two hits from Roper and one each from Edick, Gary, McKown and Nelson. Georgia Tech starting pitcher Ryan Turner (1-1) got the win, pitching a career- high 7.0 innings. He allowed six hits and three runs with zero walks and five strikeouts. Ryan Self worked a perfect eight for the Jackets, while John Goodman struck out the side in the ninth to earn his second save of the season.
