For more info go online: www.wwcufm.com CsisCs#BY Jennifer Wilkey | WC Music has always been a very, very big part of my life, and radio brings me to the forefront of it, says Michael Mitchell, a 21-year-old WCU student from Charlotte, NC. Better known as Hollywood, Mike hosts Power 90.5s show The Afternoon Drive, which airs on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 4 - 6 P.M. Mitchell, an electronic media major, says he was first introduced to Power 90.5 through two of his communications classes. Radio I and Radio Practicum get you heavily involved, he says. I just wanted to stick around, be as involved as I can while I am here. Theres a lot of love in that station. The Afternoon Drive combines both talk andmusic to entertain the audience. We incorporate a little humor, talk about current events, and stuff like that. We try to keep it up-to-date and fresh, says Mitchell. Although he usually hosts the show alone, he occasionally gets someone else from the station to join him. I like to have a co-host, somebody I can talk to and goof around with, he says. Power 90.5 is a classic rock station and Mitchell has little say in the music he airs. It is fine with him since he happens to be a big fan of classic rock. Sometimes we can bring our own classic albums, says Mitchell. I love to bring The Joshua Tree and play songs off that. Specifically Bullet the Blue Sky. Even if he could play different music on his show he wouldnt change the style much. Mitchell says, If this were my radio station, Id play all around rock: industrial, alternative, and regular rock. But none of that pop stuff; Creed sucks. Itd be an all-around rock and roll circus. In his free time, Mitchell enjoys composing his own music for the numerous instruments he plays. My boss called me another Trent Reznor [of Nine Inch Nails] because I do everything myself. There is a comfort in being able to make all your own decisions, being able to write and record your own music, he says. Like many musicians, he says he has been influenced by his predecessors. I definitely do look up to Trent Reznor as an influence for my own writing, and anyone else who has made a change in music, whether it be in the past or now, says Mitchell. Whoever keeps it cool is good in my book. Mitchell plans on staying in the radio business after graduation. Id like to pursue radio once I graduate, anywhere that is open to someone like me. The cool thing about the station now is that its rock, so my personality fits in there, he says. Im very outgoing, not one to sit around and listen to Kenny G. Some students have complained about the new classic rock style of Power 90.5, but that doesnt bother Mitchell. The station now is becoming a very real part of this community, whether they like it or not, and were going to keep doing what we do. Were happy with that; me especially, he says. Quit your bitchin, its a celebration. a a a a i A a
