  • Cataloochee | Ski Resort By Luke Butchart | WC Cataloochee Ski Resort recently underwent a multi-million dollar renovation. The new Omigosh double chair lift was refurbished. The Rock Island Line quad lift was added, making transportation to the slopes easier for the skiers and snow-boarders. Snow-making is ongoing throughout the season, says Tony Waddell, the general manager. If theres no snow, theres no business. The snow covers the entire side of the mountain, and the slopes peak at 5,400 ft., over a mile high. The multitude of trails includes the Upper Omigosh and Alley Cat, both black diamonds. The Snowbird Trail and High Meadow Run are both only open with natural snow but offer miles of exciting skiing. There are also the Lower Omigosh and the Rock Island Run slopes for intermediate skill-level skiers. For beginning skiers and snow-boarders, there are several low-elevation slopes. The High Meadow Run needs 18 inches to open up, says Dave Peiffer, an employee at Cataloochee and a skier with seven years experience. But once the run is open there is an estimated two miles of skiing and that is definitely worth checking out. There are more than 75 professional skiers and snow-boarders at Cataloochee who teach skiing and snowboarding. The ski school trains snow-bound students of all ages and ability levels. The Cat Cage Terrain Park has been open for two seasons and features large jumps and rails, occasionally setting up picnic tables. Cataloochee modifies the slopes and the terrain park to cater to the ever-changing winter sports, says Peiffer, who started working at Cataloochee in the fall. He actually learned how to ski at Cataloochee. Every Wednesday and Sunday there is a race course set up on the slopes for the junior race program that allows kids from sixth to twelfth grade to participate and learn how to ski on a professional level, says Peiffer. There are events going on throughout the season too. Every season we hold an Elvis day and we hold a torch relay on New Years, says Peiffer. But one of the biggest events is the Big Air contest that is held at the end of every season. The Big Air contest is open to everyone and is set up at the bottom of the mountain so spectators can hang out at the lodge and cheer for their friends. The lodge is a large mountain cabin with plenty of hot foods to choose from, a bar for drinks after a day of intense skiing, and a large fire pit surrounded by couches and places to relax. The Big Air contest takes place on March 4 when Cataloochee hosts their Spring Frolic Beach Blast. They will have tropical drinks, races, beach music and a Jost and found charity sale. Cataloochee offers hometown environment and hospitality, says Peiffer. Something you cant find at other resorts across the state. Cataloochee Ski Resort offers skiing everyday of the week and is close and convenient for Western students.
