  • 16 WESTERN CAROLINIAN SPORTS February 16,2000 Volleyball Picks Up Five Sports Information Head volleyball coach Michelle Hansen, whose team finished 20-13 overall, 15-5 in the Southern Conference last season, announced the signing of five student-athletes to join the team for the 2000 fall season. "We are very excited about the versatility and strength of this group. This is by far our deepest recruiting class," said Hansen. Sara Komosinski, from Muskegon, Mich., was named Most Valuable Player for the Mona Shores High School volleyball team as a junior. The 5'11" outside hitter was also named to the all-conference honorable mention team. "Sara should be one of our strongest blockers in the front line with her size and leaping ability," said Hansen. "Sara is a great jumper that brings a lot of heat. She has experience in the middle as well as on the outside. We will look for her to be a main passer for us." Shari Harder will join the team from Waukesha, Wis. Harder was named all- state honorable mention, first team all-conference and holds several school records. She has broken the single season assist record dishing out 1,060 assists for an average of 9.91. The 5'8" setter also broke the 3-game match assist record with 55 and the five- game match assist record with 68. Harder finished her high school career at Catholic Memorial High School second on the team in service aces with 70 for an average of 0.65 per game. "We are very fortunate that Shari comes from such a strong club volleyball background. Her experience of playing at a high level will help her to compete right away," said Hansen. "Being a left-handed setter with good size, Shari will add another dimension to our offense with her ability to attack." Hansen also announced two players from Florida, Michelle Gorton and Pamela Stein. Gorton, a 5' 11" middle blocker, was named to the all-state, all-area, all-county and the all-star team. She led the team in kills, 324 and blocks per game, 1.7. The Port Charlotte High School graduate earned the Wendy's High School Heisman Award. "Michelle's strengths will be her versatility. She has the ability to play any position in the front row very well," said Hansen. "Michelle is also a solid passer and defender in the backrow. With her strong work ethic and coach ability, we look for her to make an immediate impact." Also from Port Charlotte, is Pamela Stein. As a 6'0" middle blocker, Stein was named third-team all-state, all-area team, and team MVP. She broke the schools record for career kills with 664 as well as being a Wendy's High School Heisman Nominee. "Pam is a strong physical player, who at 6-0 can dominate at the net both offensively and defensively," stated Hansen. "We are looking for Pam to contribute right away as she has the ability to terminate the ball from many areas of the net." Joining the four will be local Hickory, NC native Cristyn Harrison. Harrison, a 5' 10" middle blocker, is a graduate of Fred T Foard High School. "Crissi is a very smart well rounded player. She is the type player that always comes up big at crunch time," stated Hansen on the local. "She comes from a State Championship team and knows how to win. We have had our eye on her since her sophomore year and are thrilled that she chose Western after many years of waiting." She was named MVP in the State Championships for the 1997 season. A two- time all-conference selection and all-conference MVP for the 1998 season. "Every one of them has the ability to step into a starting role and we are excited about the competitiveness this will bring to our program," said Hansen about her recruits. "This recruiting class should definitely help us maintain our position as one of the top teams in the Southern Conference." Daniel Hooker contributed to this story. Wanna Oct Out of Cullowhee!? Soccer Signs a Trio Sports Information Last week at the NCAA regulated signing date, the WCU women's soccer and volleyball teams announced their commitments. Coming off its inaugural season boasting a 10-9-1 overall record, head coach Debbie Hensley will return all 11 starters from last year's team. To help bolster that lineup, Hensley announced the signing of three student-athletes to national letters-of-intent. Lauren Bramlett, Jordan Howell and Felicia Wilson have all committed to becoming Lady Catamounts in the fall of 2000. "I could not be more thrilled about the quality of these three student-athletes," said Hensley. Lauren Bramlett is a powerful forward from Anderson, SC. A member of the 1999 South Carolina State Championship Upstate Girls Soccer Association United Soccer team, Bramlett is a proven scorer who will add great depth to the offensive attack. She is also a member of the South Carolina Olympic Development team. Hensley commented, "I am expecting great things from Lauren next year. She should contribute a lot to our program offensively. I'm expecting all three of these student-athletes to make immediate impacts on our young program." Jordan Howell attends Pinecrest High School in Southern Pines, NC. She has been a member of the North Carolina Olympic Development team for six years, as well as playing defense with the Capital Area Soccer League Spartan Speed club team where she helped guide the team to the 1999 North Carolina State Cup Championship. A forward for her high school team, Howell was a three time all-conference recipient and led her squad in goals scored every year. She was also a two-time all- region performer. "Jordan will most likely step in as a midfielder or defender and increase our overall depth," said Hensley. Felicia Wilson is a speedy forward/ outside-midfielder from Myers Park High School in Charlotte, NC. A forward for the Charlotte Soccer Club, Wilson helped lead the team to the 1997-98 and 1999- 00 North Carolina state championships. At Myers Park High School, she earned team MVP honors as a freshman. "Felicia Wilson, like Howell, comes from one of the strongest club teams in the state and the south region and will increase our overall speed and versatility."
