  • AMPUS NEWS LMP PRESENTS: WEEKEND EXCURSION by luke butchart | WCnewsmagazine 2.0 November 12 at 9 P. M. Weekend Excursion (WE) just released their first live album entitled Are We On Yet? This album has been anticipated by fans for years and is finally available. It includes 12 original songs recorded live from Ziggys in Winston-Salem and at Lincoln Theatre in Raleigh. The band was reluctant at first about releasing a live album because of their leniency on live recording by fans during their shows. We have always encouraged the recording of our shows, says Sam Fisher, lead singer. We have always been more about the music than music sales. Album sales are not really a major concern of the band. However, they draw from 800 to over 1,000 fans into crowded arenas for their shows. The band includes Danny Donovan on bass guitar, Cas Edmunds on drums and vocals, Jeff Foxworth on guitar and vocals, John Perryman on guitar and Sam Fisher, lead singer. They perform up and down the eastern seaboard in locations such as Ziggys Tavern in Winston-Salem, The House of Blues in Orlando and The Orange Peel in Asheville. WE recently returned home to Raleigh from 10 weeks overseas doing a tour in the Middle East and Micronesia, the Pacific Rim. We only felt slightly in danger once during a show in Bagram, Afghanistan, says Fisher. The show had to be stopped and the arena emptied because there were several loud explosions outside. Turns out, there was some mine testing going on not too far from where we were playing. Much of the time was spent in Pakistan and Afghanistan, promoting peace and entertaining troops from all over the world. There were groups of soldiers from Korea, Australia, Japan, China, all over, says Fisher. One of the best memories was spending time with the Italian troops because they always had the best tasting foods. The band performed for the soldiers serving in the coalition forces on the fourth of July in Kandahar, Afghanistan, which was an extremely emotional time for everyone. : WE describe themselves as modern rock sound with classic roots from The Beatles, Marvin Gaye and Marley. They have also been considered by many to be of the jam bands with the encouraged live recording at their shows. We enjoy changing it up, giving the fans something new for each show, says Fisher. With extended intros and jams at the end of each song. The band toured primarily the South-east for their first six years and found the South to be a great place for a rock group to make a start. The fan base is amazing. Ive met people at our shows that traveled hundreds of miles to see us. Its definitely a great feeling. Now the group performs from Orlando to Washington D.C., and everywhere in between. The members of WE dont know exactly what is in store for the future, but each of them knows he wants to continue on with music. They are all active songwriters. Foxworth and Fisher have been producing demos and recording tracks on the side for years. Fisher also produced an acoustic album with a separate group to be handed out during WE shows in 2004. John Plymale is Weekend Excursions producer. He has produced bands such as Squirrel Nut Zippers and The Meat Puppets. Red Eye Distribution is responsible for putting their records in online and retail stores around the country. The albums are available at Best Buy and similar stores. Weekend Excursion is on tour right now in North and South Carolina and plans to make a stop before the end of the year here at Western. The date is set for November 12 at 9 P. M. Costs are two dollars for students and four dollars for non- students. Keep up with LMP for updates and more information.
