  • CAMPUS NEWS KAUFFMAN APPOINTED DEAN OF WCU'S BUSINESS COLLEGE Norman Leroy Kauffman, a member of the Western Carolina University faculty since 1994, is the new dean of the university's College of Business. Kauffman, a resident of Clyde, assumed the head leadership position in the College of Business on July 1 after serving one year as interim dean. He replaces Ron Shiffler, who left the university to accept another position. Kauffman began his career at Western as an associate professor in the department of accounting and information systems. He was appointed associate dean of the College of Business in May 2000, a position he held until being named interim dean in July 2002. Through those appointments, and the current dean's position, he has continued to occupy the position of associate professor. Prior to joining the Western faculty, Kauffman held teaching positions at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, The Ohio State University, and Eastern Mennonite College. Kauffman received a bachelor's degree in business administration from Eastern Mennonite College in 1977, a master's degree in business administration from the University of Montana in 1978, and a doctoral degree in accounting from Ohio State in 1988. At Western, Kauffman has served on many committees at the university, college and departmental levels, including the dean's council, task force on drug and alcohol, council on faculty affairs, general education review committee, and the faculty senate. He is a member of the American Accounting Association, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Institute of Management Accountants, the Beta Alpha Psi accounting honorary society, and the Delta Sigma Pi business professional fraternity. In 1999, Kauffman was a finalist for Western's Jay l. Kneedler Professor of Excellence Award, and he received other teaching honors while on the faculties of Virginia Tech and Ohio State. WCU OFFERING TWO COURSES IN JAPANESE LANGUAGE THIS FALL Two courses in Japanese language will be offered this fall by the Western Carolina Univer- sity modern foreign languages department. "Japanese 101: Beginning Japanese I" will be offered Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 12-12:50 p.m., and "Japanese 231 : Intermediate Japanese l" will be offered Mondays, Wednes- days and Fridays from 20:50 p.m. The courses will be led by instructor Masafumi Takeda, a graduate student in the education specialist degree program with a teaching assistantship In the department of modern foreign Takeda earned his bachelor's degree in international study from the Tokyo International University and his master's degree in Japanese language trom Willamette University in Salem, Ore; He has taught Japanese in the Salem public schools, at Willamette University, and at Mount Carmel School in Saipan€ Western Carolina students interestedin Japanese language and Culture also have the opportunity to study in Japan for a semester or summer. Both sessions will také place from 6 p.m. on Tuesdays. Class wi meet one Weekend for a field *training exercise. The curriculum will include emergency medical care, survival techniques, disaster situati ns, rescue skills, Outdoor environments and physiCäI fitness considerations. OLD PHOTOS OF CULLOWHEE VALLEY NEEDED FOR RESEARCH AT WESTERN Local residents can help Western Carolina University researchers determine what Cullowhee Valley and the university campus looked like decades ago by bringing in their old photographs for inspection at the Mountain Heritage Center. The staffs of the Mountain Heritage Center and Special Collections of Western's Hunter Library, and Jane Eastman, assistant professor of anthropology, are seeking photographs of the area taken during the 1920s through 1950s. Residents are asked to bring their photographs to the lobby of the Mountain Heritage Center on one of two Sundays, July 27 or Aug. 3, from 2 to 5 p.m. With the owner's permission, some photographs may be scanned for the historical record, but everyone will return home with the pictures they bring. The Mountain Heritage Center, open to the public free of charge, is located on the ground floor Of Western's H.F. Robinson Administration Building, Daily visiting hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday though Friday and 2 to 5 p.m. on Sundays.
