  • september 18- 24, 2002 news Inside this issue - Read all about affect your rights on pages 7-13. newsma azine news By: Chad Messei I WCnewsmagazine student headlines NCAA sports journalism scholarship The NCAA is offering eight $3000 sports journalism scholarships for the 2003-04 school year, and you might be eligible for one of them if you are a full-time junior and do sports coverage for your college paper. If not, WCnewsmagazine is looking for sportswriters. Hint, hinte The scholarships are. funded by a $270,000 gift from the Freedom Forum, and they are meant to help future sports journalists, as well as promote a culture of quality sports journalism education at the undergraduate level. Since there is a December 13 deadline for applications, here is what you have to doe If you are interested in the scholarship, head on up to the Old Student Union and write three sports stories for us. Then send those same three sports stories as a writing sample, along with the application and related materials, and you could win $3000. It's so simple; it's almost criminal: free money just for attending sporting events and describing what you see, This is the eleventh year of NCAA sports journalism scholarships, and the time has never been better to jump on board the bandwagon at the college level. Indivisble, With Liberty And Justice For All o" campus headlines WCU has record fall enrollment Growth is the watchword here at WCU with new buildings going up, three consecutive years of freshman applications and now a record fall enrollment of 7,034 students. Chancellor Bardo delivered the good news to the board of trustees at their quarterly meeting on September 6. The record student enrollment is the .first time in university history that the school has eclipsed 7000. The previous high was in 1975, when 6912 students called Cullowhee home. This fall, WCU received a new record 4,150 freshman applications, I , 220 of whom were admitted, 42 more than last year. The average SAT scores and GPAs of these incoming freshmen are also new records at 1012 and 3,25 respectively. There are 5,374 undergraduates on campus, 29 more than a year ago, and I ,204 graduate students, 110 more than the previous year. 456 distance •learners make up the rest of the total. Battle of the Bands On October 5, EJ Whitmire Stadium will play host to the Western Carolina University Tournament of Champions, an invitational marching band competition for high schools. Twenty-five high schools will be represented at this, the second annual event, and four more are on a waiting list to compete. This means that 2,500 musicians will be on campus. Who along with their families, entourages and gangsta posses will make up an expected crowd of 9,000 strong. Five southeastern states will be represented. The 25 bands will be competing for the Chancellor's Award, an art glass bauble that travels to the winner's school, until the next year. The competition will be divided into two sessions. The prelims will be held from 8 A. M. to 4 P. M. , where bands wilt be divided into groups based on the number of musicians. They will be judged on performance, visuals and overall The champions from each Classification will then join the next 5 highest-scoring bands in the finals, held at 6:45 P, M. WCU's Pride of the Mountains marching band will give an exhibition in between the sessions. Participating schools from NC include: Concord; Croatan; East Davidson; East Lincoln; Eastern Randolph; Lincolnton; North Buncombe; Northwest Cabarrus; Polk County; Reynolds; Smoky Mountain; Southwestern Randolph; Swain County; Tuscola (yaaaay); and Weddington. Out-of-state participants include: defending champion Alan C. Pope H.S, and Wheeler High School Of GA.; Chapin High School, Clinton High School, Travelers Rest High School, James E Byrnes High School, Wren High School, and Lugoff-EIgin High School of SC; Science Hitt High School of TN.; and Bassett High School of VA. Tickets are $5 for the preliminary session and $5 for the evening finals. For more information, call (828) 227-2259 or click on http:// prideofthemountains.wcu.edu/html/. 5K race and fun run at Mountain Heritage Day WCU's 28th annual Mountain Heritage Day wilt now include a 5K race and one mile Fun Run, that is if you call that sort of thing fun. The events are sponsored by Western's Honors College. Starting at 8 A. M. on September 28/ people can sign up for the events and check in on the intramural fields adjacent to Reid Gym. The 5K race begins at 9 A. M. and the Fun Run, intended for rugrats under the age of 12, will start at 8:45. Entry fees for the event are $10 for the 5K before September 26 and $12 on race day. The fee for the Fun Run is $5, and people who want to donate to the Honors College but do not wish to run can be $10 tephantom runners.
