  • newsmagazine student living Trailblazin september 4- 10, 2002 By: Kris Hauman I WCnewsmagazine I contrubutor Want to go on a hike with a rewarding view without having to drive as far as the Smoky Mountains or the Blue Ridge Parkway? Fortunately, Pinnacle Park is only about 10 miles away in our neighboring town of Sylva, which has a 1,088-acre wilderness area with miles of hiking trails. So, if you don't have all day or much in the way of gas money, it's a great place to get some exercise and enjoy the beauty of the woods. It takes about two hours to hike up the mountain. From the rocky peak, you can see Cullowhee, Sylva and more. Most of the trail to the peak is uphill, but the dramatic view on top is well worth the sweat. Besides, if you get too hot there are plenty of streams around so that you can splash yourself with some cool water. Directions: Turn right out of campus and follow 107-N to Sylva. Turn right onto 23. Just before the theater, turn left on Skyland Drive, which is in between McDonald's and the BP. Soon after going under the bridge, turn left on Fisher Creek Road. Follow Fisher Creek Road to where it dead-ends at the parking area for Pinnacle Park. The trail starts behind the iron gate. Follow the main trail up the mountain. The hill may seem like it will go on forever, but remember, you can look forward to coming down. About two-thirds of the way up, and perhaps 10 minutes after passing a waterfall on the left, turn onto the trail that goes off to the left. This trail will end up at a flat, open area with good views. But it gets better. Keep going across the clearing, and follow the trail to the left. It will take you to the beautiful rocky overlook. If you want a much longer hike, there are trails that go from Pinnacle Park to Waterrock Knob on the Blue Ridge Parkway. CAMPUS OPPORTUNITIES TO MAKE MONEY! !
