  • newsmagazine NC: First in Flight o Second in U. S, for Syphilis Cases Sex is hard to talk about. No way around it. The subject, even in academia, remains taboo. We understand this provocative issue will spark controversy, but more over, we hope it opens a dialogue that encourages personal responsibility for understanding the consequences accompanying sex. Our focus centers on the consequences and responsibilities that go with sexual relations. Now everyone knows that sexual relations between two unmarried people in our state is illegal. Therefore, we want everyone to know that this issue of our publication is not an endorsement to go out and have sex, especially if you are not married. However, we understand that whatever you decide about sex is your own personal •choice. We cannot get involved in such potentially life-changing decisions. You must determine for yourself what is appropriate for you and you alone. No one else can dictate this for you. In a state in which numbers for STD diagnoses are on the rise and that ranks second in the nation for syphilis, we would be remiss if we did not do the responsible thing and provide adequate information to help you decide, as an adult, how and when to engage in sexual practices with a partner. Most importantly, it is essential that everyone understand that the only guaranteed prophylactic against disease is 100% abstinence. Barring abstinence, proper testing for you and your partner prior to monogamous sexual activity should be sought if your intention is to stay 100% certain of remaining disease free. On a textual level, the argument and remedy seem quite sound. But on a physical level, hormonally speaking, the issue is not as clear. The whole idea that people out there are engaging in sexual activities that have consequences, which they do not have knowledge of, is, in itself, irresponsible. To avoid this conversation is to deny that people sometimes make mistakes. This dialogue should also not be seen as anything other than an attempt to raise awareness. We are simply asking you to look around before making decisions that, while possibly could enhance your relationship, could cost you your life. inion august 21-27, 2002 WCnewsmagazine BCAc}ZBoARD •REP, inside this issue- 'Western.Caroiinian ISSUES ftight newsma -me Let us know what you think. Send Us Email: WC@WCU.EDU For some people out there, the frank and candid conversation on Rebekka Armstrong's "Exposed," (Rebekkaonline.com), website is probably too much to handle. But for the approach taken, we give Armstrong a lot of credit. Her honesty in dealing with her disease, one that many people today misconstrue as being a "manageable disease, like diabetes" is something that is long overdue considering the three decades that we have been battling AIDS and HIV. But we should also mention that not everyone is as fortunate as Armstrong to have the financial backing, the likes of Playboy, to assist in battling this costly disease. Medications to combat the effects of HIV are very costly. In fact, according to online source HIV dent.org, a non-profit website sponsored by some big pharmaceutical companies, "[the] total per person lifetime direct medical costs range from $81,200 to $112,700; higher costs reflect increased spending on medications." * Now you know! Decisions can be expensive. So, why not make every decision, not just the sexual ones, as if your long and happy life depended upon it?
